Jaguars once roamed vast areas of the southern United States, primarily in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and parts of California. However, habitat loss, hunting, and population decline pushed them out of most of their range, and they were thought to have disappeared from the U.S. entirely by the mid-20th century. In recent years, a few jaguars have been spotted in Arizona, suggesting they are slowly making a comeback, likely migrating from northern Mexico. Efforts to protect their habitats and restore corridors for their movement offer hope for the return of these majestic big cats to the U.S. wilderness. Video
