Sharing my (& this insanely good bandās šš„š) rendition of my grandfatherās favorite songā„ļø from @nyirishcenter āNew York Croons for Christmasā guitarist & MD: Sean Harkness @harksongs violin: (2024 GRAMMY nomineeš) Sara Caswell @saracaswellvln bass: Jennifer Vincent @jennifer.vincent.9674 drums: Ray Marchica @raymarchica In the intro, Iām speaking about my grandfather, with whom I had a special bond. Music & storytelling were our two main languages. He picked me up from elementary school blasting jazz on his car radio because he was 1.) the main character 2.) mostly deaf after WWII. He instilled in me a love of the great music (& singers) of his day. He was a great singer himself, I write with a grin, because he would often break into one of these standards with gusto & stylized vibrato for comedic effect. Even though his singing would illicit the laugh he wanted as part of a story or bit, he had a beautiful voice! Iām so lucky we had so much time together, and that (maybe because I was his first grandchild?) he always treated me like his pal & contemporary. The 72 years between us would seem a narrower gap when he told me stories about frequenting the iconic jazz clubs of NYC with his buddies, as if it was just last weekend. If I sang with or saw a band perform in the city, Iād go home & report back. Heād first ask: āHow many pieces?ā Technology was huge in retroactively sharing that time in his lifeāhe was amazed we could ācall upā any recording or video with the help of the iPhone, which he called āThe Flickerā orāš„āāThe Switchboxā. He made it to the great age of 93, sharp & himself to the very end. He died on this day 8 years ago. Iāll always think of him & these songs a little more around Christmastime. In his last days, he was doing the crossword in his hospice bed while Sarah Vaughan crooned on a Bluetooth speaker. His visitors were many, and being that all the family & cousins were together for Christmas, we even danced around his bed. How amazing is it, that a song this undeniably classic can hold so many people in it? Every listener, audience member, and singer for the short duration of the song, is conjuring a loved one.
