Imagine being arrested in your own country simply because of the language you speak. Thatâs exactly what happened to a Puerto Rican family in Milwaukeeâa mother, grandmother, and toddlerâwho were detained by ICE for the crime of speaking Spanish in public. Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens. They had no immigration issues. They were targeted simply for existing while Latino. This isnât just a mistake. This is racial profiling. This is systemic oppression. And if history has taught us anything, itâs that when a government starts targeting people based on language, race, or religion, the consequences are devastating. People donât like when we compare modern-day America to Nazi Germany, but letâs be honest: this is exactly how it started. Governments donât announce tyranny with flashing lights and sirens. It begins with small, âjustifiableâ violations of human rights. It begins with looking the other way when people are singled out for their race or background. It begins with neighbors turning on each other. And before you know it, entire communities are stripped of their rights, dignity, and freedom. Some of you might think, âThis was just a mistake.â No. A âmistakeâ is misspelling a name. A âmistakeâ isnât ICE agents throwing American citizens into detention centers because they spoke the wrong language in the wrong place. Thatâs profiling. Thatâs discrimination. Thatâs dangerous. Wake up. If they can do this to them, they can do it to anyone. Speak up nowâbecause silence is complicity.
