My mother drove every week/end 2.5 hours to be with Nicky for those 5 years. To pray with Nicky, with all her mighty faith she instilled into our family. When my son was preparing to transition, he laid in his bed staring at the ceiling because he could barely move, but boy did he know how to EXPRESS himself. Our conversations ran deep and that’s what I miss— his ability to be present, to pause, most importantly, he was AWARE.
