If it makes you feel better, Walt wasn’t entirely a curmudgeon… he did enjoy setting up train sets and toys for the girls for Christmas. 🚂 His lack of finesse at gift-giving didn’t stop with his family. According to WED Imagineer Joyce Carlson, “At Christmas time, we’d have a little party and he’d bring little compacts, face powder, nylons, cosmetics, and he’d go around to all the girls, and you could pick what you wanted. Merry Christmas!” 😂 I also wonder if Walt wasn’t a bit of an introvert at heart, beyond being simply a workaholic who hated taking a day off (which Isadly relate to all too well 🙈), especially with Lillian’s comments about how he’d retreat to being alone after social functions. “Walt didn’t like holidays because he couldn’t work on them. Everybody took off for the day, at the studio. Christmas didn’t mean a great deal to him. When he got through with the festivities he went to his room and read, usually. He never wasted time. He liked to set up the children’s toys as he did the train one year. But he couldn’t just sit and visit with people. ”-  Lillian Disney  #waltdisney #disney #disneychristmas #wdfmuseum #disneyparks #disneyholidays #christmastime #retrodisney #disneyvintage #disneyland #disneylandpark #classicchristmas #disneynerd #disneyhistory #lilliandisney #christmasgift #christmaspresent #disneyfan #disneylandcalifornia #disneytiktok #disneytok #mainstreetusa #advocateforyourself
The white costumes aren’t what you think they are… I know it looks a bit odd, but they are a group representing the culture of Switzerland. The masks are supposed to scare evil spirits away. 👹 It’s been interesting to read everyone’s responses to the fact that Walt Disney didn’t like the holidays (an account which came directly from his wife Lillian in an interview with biographer Bob Thomas after Walt passed). I think it’s really hard for us to judge exactly why he felt this way… we know he loved his work at the studio and hated leaving it, even for a day, and that he didn’t like social functions because he thought they were a waste of time. But it’s also possible that he didn’t have a lot of nostalgia for the holiday because growing up his family was very poor and Walt rarely got toys for Christmas unless his brother Roy earned some extra money and bought him one. When he was eight years old, Walt got up at 4 AM to do a paper route for his dad’a business, and would sometimes play with the toys that children would be on their porches since he didn’t have many of his own. Christmas was mostly practical gifts, and though he tried to sell his dad on the idea that the boots would make him be able to deliver papers more efficiently, Elias Disney still saw the “fancy” boots as an extravagance and said no. A note on the Christmas processional: Most people believe that the tradition started in 1958, but it actually started in 1956 when a group of eight choirs assembled on the steps of the train station to sing Christmas carols. They started processing after the Christmas and mini lands parade in 1957, and it became its own tradition in 1958. #waltdisney #christmas #disneychristmas #disney #disneyland #candlelightprocessional #disneyparks #disneysecrets #disneytrivia #disneyfacts #walt #ladyandthetramp #lilliandisney #disneyholidays #disneylandchristmas #disneyparade #disneyhistory #disneystudios #mickeymouse #disneynerd #disneyfan #disneyfans #disneymovie #disneytiktok #disneytok #mainstreetusa #disneylandpark #disneylandcalifornia
