im not gonna pretend that feeding tubes dont suck…but they are the only reason i’m i alive. i am grateful to these pieces of plastic keeping me alive, but nothing about it is easy i have had nj tubes(nasal tubes that go through your stomach, duodenum, and into your jejunum), gj tubes(a surgical feeding tube that has one port that goes to your stomach and one port with a “tail” that goes into your jejunum), and now seperate g and j tubes(instead of 2 access point in a singular tube, there are 2 seperate tubes with the g tube goes directly to your stomach, and the j tube going to your jejunum. for me i had to get one placed because the j tail kept flipping into my stomach). i also have had a PICC line and currently have a Hickman Catheter for TPN(Total Parenteral Nutrition) since my GI tract is paralyzed and I cannot get enough nutrition through my tubes. each type of tube has its own pros and cons but here is some of my experience with these tubes: nasal tubes are more short term, and easier to place. however for me they would flip, clog, kink, and break so easily. they aren’t supposed to be long term, but unfortunately many docs(including mine) keep them in for wayyy to long which can cause permanent damage to your nose and esophagus. surgical tubes are better long term options. i was supposed to start with a GJ, but my inital placement failed leaving me with a straight G tube. i was able to get a GJ tube placed and had one last but they loved to break and flip 24/7 so i was forced to get a seperate J tube. G/GJ tubes are an easier placement(especially if done through endoscopy) whereas J tubes are a more invasive & major surgery(which is why GJs are more “ideal”). my G tube gives me SO much QOL so i am not throwing up constantly, which i am very grateful for. however my J tube causes constant pain, and pours bile causing acid burns. i would love to pull it, but i rely on it for medications, and trickle feeds in hopes of getting off TPN. at the end of the day, i would not have met so many of the amazing people in my life if it werent for these tubes, lines, and all the things ive been through. i also was a shell of a human before my NJ tube and TPN due to severe malnutrition. FEEDING TUBES ARENT A LIFE SENTENCE!!! THEY SAVE LIVES feel free to ask any questions! i do not mind answering as long as people are respectful🤍
