“Move toward the darkness Welcome the unknown Face your blackest demons Find your weakest bone Lose your inhibitions Love what once was vile Move toward the darkness And smile.” 2024 was filled with significant challenges. I faced the loss of a parent, moved, and welcomed my mother into our home, becoming her primary caretaker. I gave up many things to reprioritize. Things were moving so fast at one point, I wasn’t sure if I could keep up. I didn’t have time to think, let alone grieve. Amid these difficult moments, there were also flickers of brightness. I received support from friends, family, and coworkers. I found joy in participating in theatre, including, surprisingly, when I played Lurch in a community production of The Addams Family last October. A character who (literally) finds his voice at the end of the show, much to the surprise of the Addams clan (and the audience). Although there were times when I felt completely lost, as cringe as it may sound, I drew inspiration from Lurch’s concluding moment. Facing your deepest fears while acknowledging the darkness is the only way forward sometimes. I plan to carry this mantra with me into the new year. #lurch #theaddamsfamily #musicals #theatre
