When I first started training Sebastian, I taught him a jump alert because, truthfully, I wasn’t super experienced with dog training yet. At the time, it felt like the easiest option for us. But after living with it for a while, I have come to realize it has its pros and cons. Jump alerts have become super popular on social media because they’re flashy, but here are a few things to consider before deciding to train one: 🔸 Your dog could get tangled in their leash or caught on your clothes. 🔸 It can be hard to tell if your dog is alerting or just being playful. 🔸 Jump alerts may throw off your balance, which could be risky. 🔸 The general public often misinterprets them as bad behavior, which can lead to unwanted comments and stares. There are great alternatives, like a nose boop, paw, or lick alert, that might be a better fit for you and your service dog. Every team is different, but it’s worth thinking through all your options first! What alert works best for your team? I got a puppy from a breeder because I couldn't afford getting a dog from a shelter and the dog not working out for me. Yes, I know rescues can be service dogs but it takes a very special dog to even have the temperament to be a service dog. I got a dog from a breeder because I needed a second service dog since my first will be retiring in a couple years. It was very hard finding a Flat Coated Retriever breeder that would even give their puppies to a service dog home. I messaged a breeder who lives 10 minutes away from me and she was extremely rude. Asking for my medical information, MY FAMILIES MEDICAL INFORMATION. I get it for me but the rest of my family? Red flag. Turns out, several Flat Coat breeders stay away from this person because she makes people feel bad for no reason at all and gets in their heads at dog shows just so they fail and she wins. (Ifykyk) While it was very hard to find a breeder, I ended up finding one in Colorado who was willing to give one of her puppies to a service dog home. And it has always been my dream to show dogs and when she mentioned she wanted to give this puppy to a showing home, I immediately took her up on the offer. I went to Colorado which was a 4 day trip, 2 days to get there, 2 days to get back (I'm from Southern California) I LOVED KÖNIGS BREEDER! she was absolutely amazing and has been extremely helpful. She loves watching König and I become very successful with his training. Before you hate on me and send me nasty messages saying I'm a dog killer because I bought a dog from a breeder.... Please do me a favor and find me a Purebred Flat Coated Retriever, with service dog temperament, is showing quality, and in the shelter... I will wait 🙌 Flat Coats are rare dog breeds, so it would be very hard to even find a purebred Flat Coat in the shelter. While I wish I could rescue every dog in the shelter - there just isn't a chance for me too. We can't rescue every dog, just like how we can't adopt every child that's up for adoption. I will forever be someone who will always love my purebreds but that's just what I prefer honestly. I made a video about the down side of jump alerts a few weeks ago and this is a great example. At the first jump, I really thought Sebastian was just super excited and playing because of the snow. Thankfully, I have a very persistent service dog. At one point he does try to get up but I use spatial pressure to correct him and reword him when he settles again. He did a great unattended stay for a couple minutes. Then the roomba started to bully him. So I gave him some kibbles.
