Your personal statement is a mess because you don’t know who you are! I see it all the time. Students dive into writing without understanding what truly drives them, and their personal statements end up with no clear, unifying theme. Before you start writing, take time to sit down and brainstorm: Who are you? What are you passionate about? What do you stand for—both in life and in medicine? For me, it was always about increasing diversity in medicine, mentoring, and teaching. I’ve used this theme in every personal statement I’ve ever written—from med school to residency. Why? Because that’s who I am, and when you know who you are, writing becomes easy. Take some time to reflect on your journey and what truly matters to you. Once you’ve got that clarity, your personal statement will fall into place. What’s the biggest challenge you’re facing in your personal statement? Drop it in the comments so I can help! 👇🏾
