Since taking on mentoring a CF, it has made me reflect deeply on how I developed and ways to help someone develop critical thinking skills! One thing I vouched prior to starting in a supervisory role was to avoid always telling the “answer”, and instead probing questions to help someone get to a conclusion about what the best decision is in that moment. Because let’s face it, especially in acute care, there are SO many factors that we are constantly balancing, that there rarely is just one “right” answer! I’m also in the camp that bullying and belittling NEVER is going to help someone learn! We’ve all been there before starting out being brand new and maybe making clinical decisions that we would do differently now. And that’s OK! All part of learning and growth! These questions above are not an exhaustive list by any means, but they are frequent questions I revisit daily to help guide my decision making. And most importantly (forgot to put on the list) but always weighing in patient goals/what they want into decisions that are being made.
