#greenscreen What % of each
#state lives in the
#capital? In the
#US, the largest
#city of a state is often not the capital, with only 17 (maybe 18)
#states opting to put the
#capitol and seat of
#government in the largest/most important city within the state. For example, centrally located
#Springfield is the capital of
#Illinois, despite
#Chicago undoubtedly being the cultural/economic enging of the state. Similar stories with
#Albany,
#NewYork (over
#NYC),
#Sacramento,
#California (over
#SanFrancisco or
#LosAngeles), and many others, while some states opted to have one city serve both functions, most strikingly
#Hawaii, where
#Honolulu is home to 24% of the state, and
#Arizona, where
#Phoenix is home to 22% of the state. Granted, this only considers city limits, the Phoenix
#metro has 60% of the state, meanwhile
#Atlanta and
#Boston certainly would have greater shares of
#Georgia and
#Massachusetts'
#population, while the
#Providence metro in
#RhodeIsland is home to 95% of the state (while the city alone is just 20%). Phoenix is also the largest state capital at 1.5 million residents, while
#Montpelier #Vermont is the smallest with just 7,774 residents. Finally, the relatively smallest state capital would be
#Olympia,
#Washington, as its the 21st largest city in its state, or
#Frankfort,
#Kentucky, which only is home to 0.62% of Kentucky's population (the smallest share of any state capital).
