Here are 3 classic big band endings to try at your next rehearsal/gig 1. Snare/Tom Roll A classic, before there were any cymbals involved with the drum set, drummers would use rolls either on the snare or toms. This ending is a great way to put a short button at the end of the piece, since a snare crack plus a bass drum at the end is a short/percussive sound. Same goes for the low tom roll! 2. Cymbal/HH Roll A true staple of any drummer ending, a big roll on the cymbals or HH. Now, in jazz, the ending needs to fit the piece. If your big band tune ends REALLY BIG, a cymbal roll on the crashes would work great with a big crash at the end. However, take note of the dynamic at the end. A calmer ending might require a quieter roll with the beads instead of the shafts. 3. Fill This is sort of a mixture of the first two endings. Go CRAZY! Play crashes and fills all around the kit and then put a big button on the end of it. This option brings a furious ending to the piece, creating an exciting finale to the tune. Endings are a small part of the tune, but and important one. What your audience will remember is always the beginning and ending of songs. If you can nail those parts, you’re golden! Similar to how a wolf would patiently wait in the bush for their prey, sometimes the song calls for a patient drummer waiting for their moment. This mentality works very well with songs that have a really strong groove like RnB, Rock, Funk, or Soul. It’s no secret that the groove is king 👑 As drummers, and especially as the “Ultimate Jazz Drummer”, it is our duty to protect the sacred “groove” at all costs. What I try to do it really be patient with my self and wait for the opportunity to play my fill. There are sometimes where I might only play 1 or 2 fills for the whole song. If the song didn’t call for more, why play them? Understanding what the song needs should be the first priority of a drummer. We have so much power to change the energy of the music, and it’s our duty to use that power wisely. Want some more FREE drumming tips? Eventually, as a drummer, you’re gonna come across odd time signatures. An odd time signature as any time that is different from the standard 4/4 or 3/4. Some examples include 5/4, 7/8, 11/8, etc. At first, these time signatures may seem a bit overwhelming to play a groove or even solo in. However, like anything that is hard, there are tips to make things easier. Here are 3 tips to play odd time signatures. 1. Emphasize The Downbeat This may be a simple and obvious tip, but it’s an important one. As the Ultimate Jazz Drummer, we have to make sure to keep the band together in any time signature. Making a big bass drum hit and accent at the begging of the bar can help keep everyone on the boat and avoid any over-boards. 2. Subdividing There are a few subdivision tricks we can use to help break down bigger time signatures into smaller ones. These can also help you feel the pulse of the groove as well. For example, 5/4 could be broken down into 2+3 (2/4 + 3/4). 7/8 could be broken down to 2+2+3 (2/8 + 2/8 + 3/8). Singing these pulses in your head will help you keep your place within the groove. 3. The “Rocking Right Hand” The “Rocking Right Hand” is a technique I use in my grooves where I emphasize the first eighth note of each beat with my right hand. For example, in 4/4, it would be (1) + (2) + (3) + (4) +… and so forth. In an odd matter however, this technique allows you to carry it over the bar line, creating a 2 bar phrase. A good example is the song in the video “Seven Days” by Sting. The drummer emphasizes every 4 eight notes, which carry over the bar line. This creates bigger accents, connecting bars together to create the illusion of common time, which can hide the odd time meter. Want some more FREE drumming tips? Similar to the right foot, your left foot plays an important role in your playing. Being able to be efficient with your movements can create a smoother sound and reduce the risk for injury. I like to use a “pulsating” technique with my left foot. The way I pulsate is by pretending that the ball of the my foot is glued to the pedal board, so I never have to take my foot off. I then pulsate eighth notes with my heel to the groove. This motion has always felt very comfortable and natural to me. A benefit to pumping eighth notes, is that it’s really easy to then play the hi hat in time. All I need to do is lift my foot whenever I want to strike the hats. Nowadays, I am all about efficiency and ergonomics. Drumming should not feel hard, it should feel effortless. I also sometimes apply this left foot concept to my right in certain cases. The groove is king, and will always be king 👑 As the primary timekeeper of the group, it’s crucial that we never forget our jobs as drummers. However, with that being said, there are few techniques that can spice up your grooves and make them simple to amazing! 1. Backbeat Play This 6/8 groove (from the video) is a great example of this concept. Depending on the type of groove, you can add additional backbeat hits to increase the intensity of the groove. I play around with the dotted eighth note in this example. I do not play it every measure, however, every 4 bars or so adds and extra layer of musical depth. This technique should almost be felt through the music rather than be heard as a fill. 2. Bass Drum Play This is similar to the Backbeat Play concept, however, we are now applying it to the bass drum. Before you go all “death metal” with the bass drum, make sure you have the basics covered within the groove. I like to support the bass line with my bass drum, this allows the groove to be locked in solid. After that is covered, I sprinkle in a few notes on the back end of phrases, right before a new phrase. P.S These first to concepts are great at developing phrases and sentences within the music 3. Ghost Notes This one is fairly straight forward, however, hard to execute. Ghost notes are a great way to add slice and flair to your beat. On the other hand, they should be used lightly. An over use of ghost notes can create a busy groove, which may or may not be desirable for the music you are playing. Want some more FREE drumming tips? One hour = one song. So this is what I did with my downtime between family gatherings on Christmas. I call it a Christmas gift to myself…. Considering the fact that all I ever really wanna do is make music… 🤷‍♂️ perfect self gift! . . . . #musicproducer #musicproducers #musicproducerlife #songwriter #songwriting #songwritingsession #beatmaker #beatmakerlife #beatmakers #musicmaker #musicmakers #artistproducer #artistproducerengineer #recordingsession #recordingsessions #productionsession #makingmusic #swfl #swflrecordingstudio #floridamusic #floridamusicians #floridamusicscene #protools
Producers!!! do you work anything like this? When I sit down to create if the first beat isn’t inspiring any lyrics I just skip over and start another one. I’ll do this over and over until I make something that inspires at least a chorus to be recorded on the spot this way anytime I sit down to create I leave with the start of a song that will be finished!! With that being said I probably have over 100 songs sitting there waiting to be finished!!😅😅😅 . . . . #musicproducer #musicproducers #musicproducerlife #songwriter #songwriting #songwritingsession #beatmaker #beatmakerlife #beatmakers #musicmaker #musicmakers #artistproducer #artistproducerengineer #recordingsession #recordingsessions #productionsession #makingmusic #swfl #swflrecordingstudio #floridamusic #floridamusicians #floridamusicscene #protools
