Tired of playing scales up and down? When learning and practicing a new scale shape, the first thing we tend do is learn to visualize and internalize the shape itself by playing it up and down. BUT, that shouldn’t be the end of learning the scale. There’s tons of information to be extracted from a scale shape and in my opinion “step 2” should be what is shown in this video ( broken 3rds ). This will give a much more angular sound to the scale, it will force you to visualize where the notes are before you play them, different picking approaches, etc… You hear great players using this approach in their solos all the time so I think it’s worth practicing and internalizing so when you’re confronted with a piece of music that utilizes it, you won’t be taken by surprise. Here’s what I think is one of the most powerful tools you can have to start making sense of and navigating the fretboard on the guitar. Octave shapes essentially show us the “geometry” or the “lay out” of the fretboard. Side note - There is a one shape missing when thinking this way, but if you follow through this layout it will make the fretboard make a lot more sense when it comes to seeing how notes repeat if you previously have struggled with this. Here is one of my personal favorite approaches to building/maintaining stamina in my fretting hand. The main point of this exercise is to have something short that loops/repeats so that you don’t have to think about what you’re playing, but rather you can focus your attention on staying relaxed throughout the duration of the exercise. Also I think it’s a great and easy way to make a melodic sequence with a small scale fragment. Here is one of my favorite approaches to dialing in hand synchronization practice but also to really work the pinky. There’s so many pros to this specific practice as it not only works on your technique, but also reinforces your scale shapes, scale visualization, and also sounds really melodic (to me) for just a small fragment of the fretboard being used at a time.
