Welcome to Wild Strides Today we drove up to Connecticut to pick up an owner surrender horse. This mare was born in holding in June of 2014 and was purchased by her previous owners as a 3 strike(sale authority) horse in fall of 2023. After spending a year to attempt to get her comfortable with domestic life they made the responsible decision to turn her over to us where we can help provide the training she needs. She will remain with us until halter broke at that time we’ll decide if she’s a candidate for adoption or if she will benefit from further training with us. I’ve avoided saying her name this far but we won’t leave you in suspense much longer! This big boy is coming to us in April! Last night concluded the online corral and we were able to win tag 5644 a 6 year old sorrel gelding from Twin Peaks HMA in California. He stands 15 hands and looks solid. Unfortunately he was on that didn’t have any great photos to show off his good looks but from the short video clips we think he’s going to be stunning! What started out as a solution to Feyre being too cold ended up being a positive for our progress. It’s cold. Colder than usual and no matter how much hay I put out for Feyre she was still shivering. Being in a stall out of the wind was going to be warmer than her run in shed. I was worried about finding the best way to move her from her corral to the stall but luckily she was very cooperative. Once in the stall I spent some time with her and realized she seemed more relaxed. I tried introducing a halter and I was able to put it on her twice! Georgie is a 5 year old pony sized mustang mare that we saved from a kill pen. We know nothing about her past but are getting to know her. She’s been staying at @Dutch’s Run Farm , our SNJ location, for 11 days now here’s how she’s doing: The weather’s been brutal, but I finally managed to get Georgie out and about for some much-needed exploration and grooming! She’s curious and brave, but still a little nervous. Every time we try to work on those feet, she shows off how good she is at picking them up… just not so much at standing still! Her patience is a work in progress, but we’re getting there. After our session up at the barn, I brought her back to her field, and she pranced around, looking so happy and learning she’s safe here. And on day 11 we gave to pressure and took our first steps towards being halter broke. Also trying to expand our touching area to include her back and belly. Day 1 with Feyre These quiet training sessions are my favorite. Coming from being in a domestic home for the last year has taught Feyre that humans mean treats but she still doesn’t allow touch. I’m getting her to iniate touch before I give her a reward. We’ll build on this to be a few seconds of touch before rewarding over the next few sessions. Day 2 with Feyre Meeting new friends and working on petting on her neck/shoulder and head. She’s realized people mean treats and will come up to say hi but has still been hesitant to allow pets. Today we worked on making pets more appealing by rewarding her for staying near us. She’s smart and food motivated so she’s picking up on everything very quickly. On 12/8/24 a kill pen in Oklahoma (over 1400 miles from our home base in NJ) posted a mustang that was available in their facility. Horses here either get lucky and are purchased to private homes or are sold for meat if not sold before their deadline. We made a plea for help and you guys answered! Thanks to several generous donors we were able to raise enough money to pay her bail, get her set up in quarantine and find a ride home. Today that ride home came to an end and she is safety in NJ We are happy to officially introduce Georgie 2020 mare born in holding out of Eagle HMA (Nevada) Georgie appears to have a good foundation as far as training goes we are hoping we will be able to track down her previous owner to find out more of what her story is. As of right now she’s getting settled in at Dutch’s Run Farm where she will be fully assessed and get prepped to be started under saddle. Since she already has ground manners we are planning on getting her riding before deciding if she will be a resident or be available for adoption. Feyre has been here for one week! She’s slowly beginning to trust us and allowing us to touch her on her left side, the right is another story. For now I’m only focusing on getting her comfortable with me on her better side. I can work the bad side later on. I alternate between approaching her and asking her to come to me. She’s still very quick to react to any changes but seems to be more curious than anything. Ending on a good note sometimes means you have to take some steps backwards Feyre started day 3 strong she was coming right up to us and allowing pets on both sides of her neck. Despite being privately owned for a year I am treating Feyre like she came directly from holding so that we can start over. That thought process was working until I introduced her to a training stick/string. I use the training stick to get mustangs used to being touched without having to put myself in a dangerous position. To mustangs coming out of holding it’s usually less threatening as I can stay out of their space. Feyre saw it and immediately panicked. She began running circles around her pen and would not let me near her. It took almost a hour for her to settle down before I was able to get her to approach me at the fence. She was more hesitant than this morning, I lost a little bit of her trust by simply trying to introduce a new training tool. Georgie got to work today! We assessed what she knows and where she’s at in her training. She seems to know a good amount but is rusty like she hasn’t been asked to do it in awhile. She took a saddle and a rider without any hesitation. After working with her we were able to connect with her previous owner! He said she has had about 15 rides and was good after she got her bucks out 😓 so we’ll be working on restarting her to try to skip the bucking part. Feyre has been making new friends. I have a few students who are interested in learning how to gentle mustangs so we’re all taking turned getting to know her. Today was cold with high winds and she still stood fairly quietly for some shoulder pets.
