Partly cloudy skies and calm seas allowed us to get amazing looks at both Bottlenose and Common Dolphin. Most of the dolphin we encountered very relaxed and boat friendly. Seeing nursery pods of Common Dolphin with the tiny calves just off our bow brought smiles to our passengers! A small pod of 6-8 Coastal Bottlenose Dolphin heading south enjoyed bow riding going from one side of our vessel to the other. 1 Humpback Whale, 1 Gray Whale and Common Dolphin! 🐋 About 4 miles south of the Dana Point Harbor was a southbound adult Gray Whale. This Gray Whale would only blow once or twice and never fluked keeping a steady pace. Turning back north were hundreds of Long-beaked Common Dolphin feeding with sea lions, sea birds and the same juvenile Humpback Whale who has been off Dana Point for the last 5 days. The ocean was churning as hundreds of animals were feeding. Midday, much the same activity was even closer to the harbor with the Humpback Whale quickly moving from one feeding group to another. On our last trip, even more dolphin and birds had moved into the area and we were soon in a “birdnado” less than 2 miles offshore. The Humpback Whale was spotted several miles out and turned in towards the coast north of San Mateo Point. Soon this Humpback was charging north and breached ahead of the Dana Pride and not long after was a second breach off our stern! We continued to watch this whale and hundreds of dolphin including tiny calves until we had to return to the harbor. #nobaddays #danawharfrocks Report & 📸 Laura Lopez

1 Humpback Whale (Happywhale ID - CRC-22836) & Common Dolphin! 🐬 Hungry Long-beaked Common Dolphin and sea birds, mostly gulls were found on all our trips. These feeding groups were found about five miles offshore from the Dana Point Harbor to the San Clemente Pier and had many calves. We saw huge schools of bait fish as they tried to seek refuge under the Ocean Adventures. As the hunting dolphin would be in pursuit, these anchovies would fly helplessly out of the water often to hovering sea birds who snatched them out of the air. Midday, a juvenile Humpback Whale about 25-30 feet in length was feeding with the dolphin. This whale was moving quickly between feeding groups and breached once off our port side before continuing south. Several sea lions with some very vocal were seen stacked up on the SJR buoy on each trip. Lots of Common Dolphin were seen on today’s trips. From 6 miles southwest of the Dana Point Harbor to less than a mile offshore on our afternoon trip! Feeding frenzies were forming south of the SJR buoy and more dolphin, and birds were all moving north towards these feeding groups!
