When Fitz aka wild ice guy told me the ice on Lake Superior is the best it’s been in 20 years, we literally dropped everything and we heading to the Chequamegon Bay. It was unreal!! Honestly if I had more time I’d be driving all over to wild skate with the crew, but living in the U.P, we usually have too much snow for wild skating. Another sport I need to invest in! So many people asked if it’s safe. Well, no wild skating is safe. We went with people who do this every day and assess ice and have all the gear. We also went over what to do if you fall in. Fitz also measured the ice the day before:) What do you need? We used Nordic blades with our skate ski boots. Poles for extra support and speed. They also helped going over cracks and rough ice. Helmets, PFDs, (even for the doggos) and ice picks you wear around your neck to help you get out ice if you fall in. Wed went about 8.5 miles to see the lighthouse. Beyond that was open water which did feel me out a little, but we were far away. We also saw ice fishermen and they always post on FB abut the ice. So that’s a good way to know as well. When we were out and stopped we heard some deep booms and cracks. Not gonna lie, I got nervous, but the ice is always cracking. We were in a protected bay, so there was no worry about waves. I’ve also ski raced across this bay in the past, and people drive across, so the ice gets pretty thick. This was definitely a Bucketlist item for me! Cannot wait to go again!🧊❄️🤍🌨️ @aracelylein #nordicskating #lakesuperior #nordicblades #iceskate #wildskate #bucketlist #wisco #northernwisconsin #yoopergirl #fyp #midwestemo #wisocnsin
