On December 24th, 2024 the Dunn County Sheriff's Office lost one of its own. Correctional Officer Jeff Reynolds was Westbound on US Hwy 12/ State Hwy 29 at 02:44 a.m. enroute to fill a shift at the Jail when his vehicle was struck by a Northbound vehicle on Cth E that failed to stop at the posted stop sign. Jeff began his career with the Sheriff's Office in 2007 and was a valued member who will be missed greatly. The operator of the striking vehicle, 40 year old Michael A. Sokolowski of Eau Claire, has been charged with Homicide by Intoxicated Use of a Vehicle and is currently being held at the Eau Claire County Jail. Three other passengers in his vehicle, including his wife, were also injured in the crash. Sokolowski had his initial appearance today and Dunn County Judge Wagner issued a $75,000 Cash bond. The crash investigation is being conducted by the Wisconsin State Patrol. Police Officer Michael Horan was shot and killed while responding to a call of a man with a firearm at the Food Lion at 4709 Lawndale Drive in Greensboro around 11:00 a.m. The suspect was apprehended and is in custody. Officer Horan was a United States Coast Guard veteran and had served with the Greensboro Police Department tor seven years. He was survived by his wife and children. Air Interdiction Agent Jeffrey Kanas was killed when the Eurocopter AS350 he was piloting crashed near Potrero in San Diego County, California, at about 10:20 am. He had taken off from Brown Field and was conducting a border security mission when the helicopter crashed into a field off of Round Portero Road about two miles south of Barrett Lake. Agent Kanas was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served with the United States Customs and Border Protection for 16 years. He is survived by his wife and two children. K9 Bumi was shot and killed while apprehending a juvenile fleeing from a stolen car after a short pursuit. At 2:30 a.m., deputies pursued a stolen vehicle with three juveniles who would not pull over for a traffic stop. When the car crashed after deputies deployed stop sticks at Alida Street and Wilkes Road in Columbia, two juveniles fled. K9 Bumi pursued the subjects, and when he found them, he was shot three times underneath his K9 vest. K9 Bumi was transported to a local veterinary hospital where he was pronounced deceased. A 16-year-old, who had a lengthy criminal recora and was wearing an uncharged ankle monitor, was apprehended at the scene. A 13-year-old suspect was arrested later that afternoon and has been charged with unlawful killing of a police dog. K9 Bumi had served with the Richland County Sheriff's Department for three months and served with his partner for two years. Our thoughts and prayers to the Greensboro Police Departmen and Family and Friends of Officer Moran.  His name is Officer M. Horan. He was a Coast Guard Veteran, Husband, Father, Son, and Police Officer. While serving, he conducted NYC and DC  9-11 harbor defense operations in the days following the attacks.  He was part of the first Coast Guard Counter-Terrorism unit in Seattle.  He has been stationed in NC, VA, WA, St. Thomas US Virgin Islands, NY, and NJ where he conducted counter-terror, counter-narcotics and counter human trafficking missions.  He has also received a lifesaving award for rescuing a father and son from rip-currents while on vacation with his family in Emerald Isle.  His life was taken by a scumbag who is now in custody. Together, we are mourning Officer Horan -- who was a husband, father, son, friend, and much more to his family. Sergeant Rick Finley was shot and killed while responding to a suspicious person complaint at the 100 block of New Bethel Road in Selmer at 3:00 p.m. As he and another officer arrived at the scene, an armed suspect ambushed them, and Sergeant Finley was shot multiple times. The suspect was shot and killed by the other responding officer. Sergeant Finley was transported to the nearest hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Sergeant Finley was a United States Army National Guard veteran. He had served part-time with the Selmer Police Department while also serving with the McNairy County Sheriff's Office, where he worked for 13 years. He is survived by his wife and children. Detention Officer Isaiah Bias died after being assaulted by an inmate at the Wayne McCollum Detention Center at 300 South Jackson Street in Waxahachie. At 3:45 p.m., Utticer Blas was transterring the inmate to his cell when he was attacked. He was transported to the local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The inmate has been charged with capital murder. Officer Bias had served with the Ellis County Sheriff's Office for over six years. He is survived by his mother, two sisters, nieces, and nephews. Police Officer Jacob Candanoza was shot and killed during a traffic stop at the 1600 block of South State Highway 34 in Terrell. At 11:00 p.m., Utticer Candanoza requested backup after initiating a traffic stop at the Motel 8 parking lot. A struggle ensued, and Officer Candanoza was shot. He was transported to Baylor Scott and White Hospital, where he died from his wounds. The suspect fled but was apprehended after crashing his truck during a pursuit. Officer Candanoza was a United States Marine Corps veteran. He had served with the Terrell Police Department for over four months and previously served with the Dallas County Sheriff's Office. He is survived by his wife and child. Correction Officer Andrew Lansing died after being assaulted by an inmate on Christmas morning around 8:00 a.m. at the Ross Correctiona Institution, 16197 State Route 104 in Chillicothe. The inmate was transferred to the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison in Lucasville, while the Ross Correctional Institution was put under restricted movement. Officer Lansing was a United States Army veteran and had served with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction for over 24 years. He is survived by his wife, two children, three sisters, and three brothers. Sergeant Elio Diaz was shot and killed during a trathc stop shortly after 5:00 p.m. at 4968 Tamiami Trail in Charlotte Harbor. During the stop, the driver pulled out a rifle and fired at Sergeant Diaz before fleeing. When he was found a few miles away, the suspect reached for his rifle and was shot and killed by deputies. Sergeant Diaz was transported to ShorePoint Health Port Charlotte, where he succumbed to his wounds. Sergeant Diaz had served with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office for over 11 years. He is survived by his wife and four children. Sergeant Diaz was posthumously promoted to Sergeant. Trooper Clay Carns was struck and killed by a passing vehicle on I-55 near Channahon, Illinois. rom the southbound highway north of Blodgett Road when a driver did not stop and struck him. He was transported to St. Joseph Hospital, where he died from his injuries an hour later. The driver was charged with failure to slow down and move over when emergency vehicles were on the side of the road. Trooper Carns had served with the Illinois State Police for 11 years.
