Happy New Year! Start 2025 by sharpening your Hawaiian pronunciation skills with this quick guide to Honolulu street names. Learn how to confidently pronounce the name "Kinau" by focusing on Hawaiian vowels and vowel combinations like 'au' in Kinau. Be aware of the glottal stop between an and u. Think of the quick breath break in 'uh-oh'—that’s the sound to listen for. Any Hawaiian street or place names you'd like help with? Let’s tackle another Honolulu street name: "Piikoi," plus a bonus word—"Lilikoi." Here’s the breakdown: In "Piikoi," listen for the glottal break between the two 'i' sounds in "Pii." It’s a quick pause that separates them. But notice that the 'oi' at the end flows smoothly—no glottal stop here. Now for "Lilikoi," the word for passion fruit. Unlike "Piikoi," the 'oi' in "Lilikoi" does have a glottal stop. That little pause makes the words distinct. This shows that not all similar vowel combinations have glottal stops—it depends on the word! Which name or word should I do next? Did you know "Beretania" is a Hawaiian word? And its pronunciation might surprise you! "Beretania" comes from the word "Britain." Other variations include "Peletania" and the more commonly heard "Pelekania." It refers to Britain, the British, and even the English language. For example: Hawaiian is called "olelo Hawaii." English is called "olelo Pelekania.” Here’s a pronunciation tip: In "Pele-ka-nia," the "a" in "ka" is slightly longer than the other vowels. This process of adapting words like "Britain" to "Beretania" and eventually "Pelekania" is called transliteration. You'll find many borrowed terms that have gone through this process, such as: pola - bowl kala - dollar palaki - brush

I don't like when people make our words "absolute". Our interpretation of the words and our relationship to the words is just as important as the meaning of the word itself. I love that there can be multiple layers to words that uncover what our kūpuna were thinking at the time. #olelohawaii #haole #thewindandthereckoning #fyp
