Replying to @The Shady Librarian Yes! Some enslaved hirelings used their earnings to secure their own freedom and then purchased other loved ones out of slavery. By law in most Southern states, however, any enslaved person who was purchased for any reason had to maintain a status, at least on paper, as an enslaved person. #family #family #facts #ancestors #descendants #oralhistory #dna #law #antebellumdiasporaproject #history #status #freedom
Replying to @Aaron Francis499 We absolutely believe in sharing truthful history about slavery in the US, so we share that Black, White, and Native people enslaved black people in this country. This history must also be given context and include information that was long ignored by historians in the US. #family #ancestors #history #knowledge #facts #oralhistory #story #storytelling #descendants #antebellumdiasporaproject #truth #BlackTikTok
I continue to share this story to illustrate how we are still so connected and connected to American history. 2.5 million of our enslaved ancestors were permanently separated from their families during the antebellum era. I am finding and reuniting with my family using DNA testing, genealogy research, and social media, and it has been an amazing experience! Side note…I intentionally didn’t share the man’s unique last name to protect his privacy. #family #history #oralhistory #ancestors #descendants #antebellumdiasporaproject #story #storytelling #dna #research #genealogy #january #storytime #2025 #sc #texas #migration #blacktiktokcommunity

Highly skilled enslaved people like brick masons, home builders, iron smiths, railroad workers, midwives and even elite seamstresses were hired out locally and throughout their states to earn money for their enslavers using skills that were in high demand, which they had mastered. They are referred to as hirelings. Their work kept them away from their families most of the year, but their labor and skills allowed them to become landowners soon after emancipation. #family #history #detail #ancestors #knowledge #greenscreen #storytelling #descendants #story #oralhistory #familystories #dna #film #documentary #craft #antebellumdiasporaproject #BlackTikTok
Oberlin: A Village Rooted in Freedom is a documentary you must see! It is an example of how many Freedmen’s communities thrived, becoming prosperous beyond any expectations, and the discriminatory practices that sought to destroy it. Replying to @Mes Merelda There is so much to admire about formerly enslaved people who built a successful community by their own hands and instilled a sense of excellence in their descendants for generations. The inability of a small community to take on the monumental power of government, unjust laws, and an inequitable judicial system in no way undermines their achievements. #history #ancestors #descendants #family #story #storytelling #research #genealogy #january #storytime #2025 #nc #oralhistory #antebellumdiasporaproject #blacktiktokcommunity #community #excellence
