February 8, 1968, a date we'll never forget. Listen to @ashlei_stevens discuss the
#OrangeburgMassacre, which occurred when a Civil Rights protest at South Carolina State turned deadly. The incident began when local students from SC State & Claflin gathered on February 6, 1968 to protest the segregation of Black patrons at the nearby All Star Bowling Alley. The following night protests resumed, and 15 people were arrested. The third night, February 8th, as students gathered on the SC State campus, all-White SC Highway Patrolmen blatantly opened fire on about 200 unarmed Black student protestors. Three students were shot and killed by the police: Freshman Sammy Hammond was shot in the back; 17-year-old high school student Delano Middleton, whose mother worked on the campus, was shot seven times; and 18-year-old Henry Smith was shot three times. At least 28 protestors were shot and wounded, mostly in the back or side as they fled the assault. All nine officers were acquitted, and only one arrest was made as Cleveland Sellers was falsed charged with “inciting a riot”. This event became one of the most violent episodes of the Civil Rights Movement, yet it remains one of the least recognized...
