Find me on the Zuck app “My child has a tantrum when…” “My child has a meltdown when…” “My child cries when…” “What should I do?!” Here’s the thing… Kids are in the middle of figuring out how the world works. Some of them haven’t even reached 500 days on this planet! It’s completely normal for them to feel upset—they’re still learning how to navigate their emotions and experiences. But here’s where many parents get stuck: reasoning, over-explaining, and using logic in the heat of the moment. When kids are overwhelmed emotionally, teaching them a lesson or justifying your decisions won’t land. That’s not the time for logic—it’s the time for calm, consistent action. The truth is, many effective strategies happen before challenging behavior occurs. If you’re relying on all your tools and strategies only after the meltdown starts, you’re more likely to prolong the situation—and might even unintentionally reinforce the challenging behavior. Now, about tools like timers and warnings… Timers and warnings are fantastic, but they lose their effectiveness if you don’t follow through. For example, if the timer goes off, your child protests, and THEN you give them extra time, the message becomes confusing. Teaching our kids to negotiate appropriately is a great skill, but if we are going to teach it and honor what they negotiated (appropriately), then we need to follow through with what both parties agreed upon. Otherwise we teach our kids that our words hold no value.  DM me TOOLKIT for instant access to my free mini crash course video, where I share 4 must-know strategies every parent needs to make life easier and more enjoyable. #aba #appliedbehavioranalysis #behavior #parenting #parentsofinstagram #positiveparenting #parentingtips #toddlers #toddlersofinstagram #behaviormanagement #parentsupport #momssupportingmoms #newmom #momsofinstagram #parenttraining #parent #bcba #rbt #parentingishard #parentcoach #toddlertantrums #toddlermom #toddlermomlife #behavioranalysis #behavioranalyst #behaviors #parentingjourney #parentsbelike #teachersofinstagram #parenthood #parentsoftiktok #kidsoftiktok #toddlersoftiktok

A few weeks ago, I shared a video about why parents respond to behavior the way they do (it's from November 29, 2024—if you missed it, go watch it, and you’ll see what I mean). But here’s the truth: offering your child something “good” after challenging behavior might temporarily stop it, but it won’t solve the issue in the long term. I know—it FEELS like it’s working because the behavior stops temporarily. But remember, anytime a behavior CONTINUES to occur means it’s being reinforced. Once you truly understand how behavior works, those “a-ha” moments make it much easier to stop reinforcing the wrong behaviors. ➡️ DM me READY to grab my Practical Parenting: No Fluff, Just Results course! Some days, when you are in the thick of being a Mom and your children are at that miserable, miserable meanager stage, there are not many great moments. And then, they do something so little, so innocent that deep down in your soul you know that you are parenting them correctly. Raising kids is not easy. Not at all! There are so many struggles, especially during the teen stage. Each stage as a mom has its challenges, but I can promise you, you will get through it. Today I caught a small glimpse into my boy child and it made my heart melt! ##RaisingKids##RaisingTeenagers##RaisingTeenBoys##MomLife##Parenting##ParentingIsHard##Momsover40##FTK##momlove##boychild
I totally get it! Some of the things our kids do can really push our buttons, maybe even make your blood boil. But hear me out! If those behaviors are of no harm to anyone, and are simply meant to annoy you, try your best to let them go. And I know what you are thinking, “How will my child know that’s not okay? Aren't I letting them get away with it?” Not at all! Behavior happens for a reason, and whether it continues depends on the consequences we provide. If your child is doing something to get your attention, and you respond by telling them to stop, you might actually be reinforcing the behavior. In other words, your reaction could be giving them exactly what they’re looking for. The key is to respond in a way that shows you’re unaffected. Even your facial expressions matter—if you look annoyed, that might be enough to encourage the behavior. Sometimes, walking away is your best move. 🛑IMPORTANT!🛑 I often hear, “I ignore my child’s behavior, but it’s not improving.” That’s likely because the reason behind the behavior hasn’t been identified. Understanding the function of behavior is the game-changer! Without that information, it’s hard to address the root cause effectively. ➡️ DM me TOOLKIT for a free mini crash course video on 4 crucial strategies every parent must know to make their life easier. Imagine you’re teaching your child to swim. Think of all the steps involved: getting comfortable in the water, submerging their chin, then their nose, eventually their whole face. Learning to float, blow bubbles, kick, and hold onto the wall and much more—all these skills build toward swimming. Now, imagine you only praise them when they’re swimming perfectly.  How discouraged would they feel if every small effort along the way went unnoticed? Would they even make progress?  This is why shaping and reinforcement are so important- not just for swimming, but for any new skill (especially language). Here are some other examples of how shaping might be used: cleaning, brushing teeth, tying shoes, writing, making their bed, playing an instrument, drawing a picture, getting dressed—the list goes on! ➡️ My Time to Talk mini-course, which focuses on communication starting from infancy, is included for free in the Practical Parenting course. And as Andrea, a parent who recently took my course, said: “The most significant change I’ve seen is being able to use what I learned with my two-year-old and noticing a real increase in her communication skills.“ So remember, celebrate small steps. Here’s the big one! Paying attention to your child BEFORE they have a meltdown is crucial! It’s so easy to overlook the appropriate behaviors our children engage in, and I get it! Us parents have stuff to do! Who has time for this!? But let me tell you, the amount of time you think you are losing by attending to your child during errands or a family outing; you may end up losing having to coax them to leave the toy aisle, sit in the cart, stop taking things off the shelf, leave the restaurant, or stay in their seat— you get the idea! By utilizing this strategy, we mitigate the chances of problem behavior happening, teach our children that engaging in the right behavior gets our attention and that running errands or eating out doesn’t become something we dread! Imagine feeling excited about playtime instead of drained by it. Imagine watching your toddlers and preschoolers thrive because their love tanks are full. And don’t even get me started on the proactive strategies… Let me tell you something—when you effectively implement the principles of behavior in your home, it’s life-changing. And I have to be honest: it’s time to stop chasing quick fixes and trendy advice that barely work for a day. You deserve better than that, and so does your child. Does this take effort? Sure, a little.  But it’s nothing compared to the endless struggles, resistance, and power battles you deal with when you are always in fight or flight mode. The best part? Once you see the difference this makes, there’s no going back. It’s not just a strategy—it’s a remarkable science that transforms how you connect, teach, and grow with your child. ➡️ DM me READY to get your hands on my Practical Parenting: No Fluff, Just Results course, which will walk you through a comprehensive guide to managing your child’s behavior. 1. Provide more prompts for positive behavior: In the video example, if I anticipate that my child may engage in inappropriate attention-seeking behavior because they were void of it all weekend, I can proactively remind them—more frequently—of the appropriate ways to get my attention. This helps guide them toward positive behavior before the challenging behavior occurs. 2. Temporarily increase the value of reinforcers: In the video example, if Grace isn’t feeling well and even small tasks are leading to challenging behavior, I can temporarily increase the reinforcement she receives to support her during this difficult time. Once she’s feeling better, I can gradually return to our usual reinforcement routine. ➡️ Comment READY to get your hands on my Practical Parenting: No Fluff, Just Results course, which will walk you through a comprehensive guide to managing your child’s behavior. 🌟 BIG NEWS 🌟 Over the next 1-2 months, I’m revamping the entire Practical Parenting course! What do you find reinforcing? For me it’s chocolate chip cookies, pizza, brownies, seltzer, and shopping 😂 There’s so much more that goes into reinforcement then we realize! It’s not as simple as a sticker or a token and then hoping our child’s behavior changes. Additionally, there’s even more to consider such as the effort, duration and magnitude— meaning, how MUCH of that reinforcer are you giving for how much work? For example, I find money to be reinforcing but I won’t do my job for $20 a day. ➡️ Comment TOOLKIT for a free mini crash course video on 4 crucial strategies every parent must know to make their life easier. Took Brett to swim therapy today, only to realize I forgot his swim shorts. 💔 They couldn’t let him in the pool, and I had to drive all the way back home. Feeling like the worst dad ever—he loves swimming, and I hate that I let him down like this. Brett, your dad loves you more than anything. I didn’t mean to mess up, and I’ll do better next time. My house used to feel like a constant battleground, so let me start by saying—I’ve been there, and I get it. I spent so much time putting out fires, not realizing that my reactions were often adding fuel to the flame. On top of that, my kids weren’t learning how to manage these situations on their own. Eventually, I knew something had to change. I took a step back, did some research, and tried a completely different approach to how I handled the constant fighting. The result? Our home is so much more peaceful. Do my kids still argue? Of course—they’re siblings, sibling rivalry is normal. But the endless physical fights and screaming? While not entirely gone, they’ve gotten SO much better. And on the rare occasion it does happen, it’s usually brief and something my kids can resolve themselves. Here’s something important to know when navigating sibling dynamics… Siblings play a huge role in shaping behavior. Whether it’s unintentional reinforcement, constant bickering, or struggles over attention, sibling dynamics can either support or hinder progress. That’s why I’m so excited to share that in just a few days, a brand-new sibling rivalry module will be replacing the old one in my Practical Parenting course. It’s about an hour long and dives deep into practical strategies for managing sibling conflicts, developing social skills between siblings, improving communication, building a positive relationship, and creating a more harmonious home. ➡️ Comment READY if you’re prepared for more cooperative days without the constant bickering, and I’ll show you how. #aba #appliedbehavioranalysis #behavior #parenting #parentsofinstagram #positiveparenting #parentingtips #toddlers #toddlersofinstagram #behaviormanagement #parentsupport #momssupportingmoms #newmom #momsofinstagram #parenttraining #parent #bcba #rbt #parentingishard #parentcoach #toddlertantrums #toddlermom #toddlermomlife #behavioranalysis #behavioranalyst #behaviors #parentingjourney #parentsbelike #teachersofinstagram #parenthood #siblingrivalry #kidsoftiktok #toddlersoftiktok #parentsoftiktok
