Some of them haven’t even reached 500 days on this planet! It’s completely normal for them to feel upset—they’re still learning how to navigate their emotions and experiences. But here’s where many parents get stuck: reasoning, over-explaining, and using logic in the heat of the moment. When kids are overwhelmed emotionally, teaching them a lesson or justifying your decisions won’t land. That’s not the time for logic—it’s the time for calm, consistent action. The truth is, many effective strategies happen before challenging behavior occurs. If you’re relying on all your tools and strategies only after the meltdown starts, you’re more likely to prolong the situation—and might even unintentionally reinforce the challenging behavior. Now, about tools like timers and warnings… Timers and warnings are fantastic, but they lose their effectiveness if you don’t follow through. For example, if the timer goes off, your child protests, and THEN you give them extra time, the message becomes confusing. Teaching our kids to negotiate appropriately is a great skill, but if we are going to teach it and honor what they negotiated (appropriately), then we need to follow through with what both parties agreed upon.
