There are 68 countries with less land than #America's #parkinglots, including very populous ones like #Haiti, the #DominicanRepublic, #Rwanda, #Burundi, and economically important #US allies, like #Israel, #Switzerland, #Taiwan, #Singapore, the #Netherlands, #Belgium, and mainland #Denmark, among many others. This can largely be blamed on something called "minimum parking requirements," which every #city has in place thanks to #zoning, that mandate how much parking must be built to accommodate certain structures. For example, some cities require a new #Walmart to build a minimum of 800 parking spaces. This creates MASSIVE land waste, as parking lots now cover roughly 1/5 of #American city centers and #downtown's. Will we ever be a #publictransit forward country, or is America doomed to be #car brained for eternity? Will more countries join this list, or will they slowly fall off?
