The bid by Japan’s Nippon Steel to buy U.S. Steel may have a new lease on life after the Biden Administration extended a deadline for the Japanese steelmaker to abandon plans to acquire the storied Pittsburgh company after President Joe Biden blocked the deal. #pittsburgh #pittsburghpa #pgh #pennsylvania #pennsylvanian
The White House began pausing federal grants and loans Tuesday, a funding freeze that could have serious implications on Pennsylvania families that rely on programs such as Medicaid. If you, your place of work, or someone you know is feeling the effects of President Trump’s funding freeze, we want to know about it. Please comment below, or send us a DM. UPDATE, 5:30 p.m., Tuesday: Minutes before Trump’s funding freeze was scheduled to go into effect, a federal judge blocked it. U.S. District Judge Loren L. AliKhan’s order lasts until Monday afternoon and applies only to existing programs. #NewsUpdate #PGH #Philly #LancasterPA #DauphinCountyPA #HersheyPA #USPolitics #Trump #News #PoliticalNews #Medicaid #Healthcare #Education #NewsUpdates

It’s been a busy start to the year for Pennsylvania sports, with the Eagles winning and the Steelers losing in the NFL playoffs over the weekend, and the Penn State Nittany Lions putting up a valiant fight but coming up short in the Orange Bowl last week. And then there’s the Pitt women’s basketball team, who made history Sunday by staging the largest regulation comeback win in NCAA women’s basketball history in its 72-59 win over Southern Methodist University. Not only did the 32-point comeback mark the largest regulation comeback in women’s basketball NCAA history, but it tied the largest overall comeback, following Texas State’s overtime win over University of Texas San Antonio after also trailing by 32. Some amazing takeaways from the Panthers’ historic win: 🏀 They were down 32-7 after the first quarter and trailed by 32 points with 1:37 remaining in the first half, before storming back to outscore SMU 54-10 in the second half. 🏀 Pitt’s defense held SMU to 7.4 percent (2-for-24) shooting in the second half and forced eight Mustang turnovers. 🏀 The Panthers shot 59 percent (16-for-27) in the second half, sparking a 31-0 run in the third and fourth quarters. 🏀 The Panther defense held SMU scoreless for the entire third quarter. After the game, head coach Tory Verdi became overcome with emotion while praising his team for making history. “I’m so proud of you,” Verdi told the team. “We came in at halftime… we were deflated, we were defeated. And I told you, ‘Anything is possible.’ And we made it happen. We made history tonight.” Next up for the Panthers: a trip to Raleigh to face NC State Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ACCNX. ✏️ : @patrickdberkery 📸 : @pitt_athletics #Universityofpittsburgh #universityofpittsburghpanthers #NCAA #Womensbasketball #CollegeBasketball #PGH #PittsburghPA

On Tuesday, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro will unveil his 2025-26 state budget proposal. Based on his first two budgets, it’s a safe bet that Shapiro will continue to place a high priority on education, including narrowing the funding gap between Pennsylvania’s poorest and richest school districts. But what else would you like to see Gov. Shapiro prioritize in the state’s next budget? We posed this question to our newsletter readers earlier this week. Swipe left to see what they had to say and tell us what you’d like to see in Gov. Shapiro’s budget in the comments. #Pennsylvania #Budget #Pennsylvaniabudget #Politics #PAPol #Papolitics #Phillypolitics #PGH #HarrisburgPA #Educationreform #Education #Payteachers #LancasterPA #HersheyPA #eriepa #kennetsquare #franklincountypa
Members of the Pennsylvania House’s LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus renewed calls to pass the Fairness Act on Tuesday in response to President Donald Trump’s administration attacking transgender rights. In his first full week in office, Trump signed executive orders that will kick transgender and non-binary US military members out of the service, ban gender affirming care for minors, and banned the use of taxpayer funds for gender affirming care. “These actions are hateful, ignorant, and dangerous—they threaten to unravel decades of progress our society has made toward fairness and equality. Gender identity and expression cannot be delegitimized by the stroke of a pen. Attempts to do so are shameful,” LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus members said in a statement. “President Trump's actions indicate he has made a serious commitment to stripping away protections and freedoms for transgender Americans.” Read more through the link in our bio. #LGBTQ+ #LGBTQ #Transrights #Trans #FairnessAct #USPolitics #PhillyLGBTQ #Philly #PGH #Harrisburg #HarrisburgPA #DauphincountyPA
