PLAY IS SO IMPORTANT!!! It can be difficult to teach play as every dog is an individual. And what their humans are willing to do with them may be limited. How I play with a lower toy-driven dog vs a higher toy-driven dog is pretty different. And those styles of play may change depending on the context and/or over time. For example, I had accidentally “made” Rain obsessed with a ball, especially while around other dogs (I took her to dog parks and beaches for “fenced in” areas to run). I didn’t realize that was the main time she got to chance the ball was only around other dogs. So we had to completely change how we did everything to work on that for about a year or so. Now, her legs aren’t as strong as they used to be, and she doesn’t care much to chase the ball. So I actually use a lot more teasing and even chasing into our play sessions (I do NOT recommend chasing your dog with a toy unless you have damn near 100% recall trust). Stryker was naturally pretty wary of his resources being taken away. So we really worked on the switch game, immediate throws when he dropped, and we built fun in the game of tug. In order for me to grab the rope, I’d get really still and “boring”, avoid eye contact, avoid chasing, and wait for him to come close enough for me to take the rope-pause, the cue him “okay” to begin the game and activate me. Within each of these play styles there are so many nuances. Just like most dogs. If you have a new dog, please be careful and observe their preferences, then play accordingly. . . . . #dogtrainer #DogTraining #playwithyourdog #dog #belgianmalinois #play #fun #kid #training #share #happydog #fulfilled #authenticity #authentic #alignedk9
