#greenscreen Maps showing the 10 most and 10 least populous
#counties in the
#USA. The 10 most populous counties, combined, are home to 41,396,451
#Americans, while the 10 least combined are home to just 3,718. This means for every resident of the LP counties, there are 11,134 in the MP counties. We then see the 100 most and 100 least, the ratio isn’t necessarily as intense, but it subtly shows the
#GreatPlains rain shadow caused by the
#RockyMountains, where the plains are too dry for most types of
#agriculture and the local economy ends up dependent on ranching (if anything at all).
#Texas is the only state to have counties in the top AND bottom 10, namely
#HarrisCounty (
#Harris is home to
#Houston), and
#DallasCounty (
#Dallas) are in the top 10, while
#Loving,
#Kenedy, and
#King all have <1,000 residents.
#Nebraska has 6 of the smallest, while
#Montana has one (
#Petroleum),
#Alaska has one (
#Yakutat), and
#Hawaii has one (
#Kalawao). California gets 4 of the top 10, with
#LosAngeles (
#LA),
#SanDiego,
#Riverside, and
#Orange, while
#Arizona has
#Maricopa (
#Phoenix),
#Illinois has
#Cook (
#Chicago),
#NewYork has
#Kings (
#Brooklyn,
#NYC), and
#Florida has
#MiamiDade (
#Miami). When we branch out to the top 100 counties, a majority of
#states have at least one, showing the wide range of
#metropolitan areas in the country.
