Pregnancy giving you what puberty didn’t? 👀 You’re not imagining it-it’s science. During pregnancy, hormone levels skyrocket. Prolactin, progesterone, and estrogen are all rising. This can make your areolas and even other areas like your belly line (see linea nigra) darker than before. Areolas darken for a purpose. Newborns are born with poor eyesight and the darker and larger areolas help baby find their food source.🥛 You might also notice Montgomery glands-those tiny bumps on your areolas-becoming more pronounced. These sebaceous glands produce an oil that keeps your nipples moisturized and protected, and even has a scent that helps guide newborns to the breast.🤯 And guess what? Nipple and areola changes don’t stop at pregnancy. They can shift throughout your lifetime due to hormonal fluctuations, aging, and even menstrual cycles. Totally normal. Totally human. Did your areolas change during pregnancy? Let’s talk in the comments.⬇️ Follow @legendairywomen for more real talk about women’s health & @Legendairymilk for all things breastfeeding!
