A lot of people thought I was crazy for working in psych wards. Funny enough, that was NOT in my plans whatsoever. . I’ll keep it 💯 with y’all. I’d just finished my 2 year degree in Mental Health/Social Work, I was 19 and looking for a job that paid better than minimum wage. When I interviewed for a position in Behavioral Health I thought I’d only be talking to people who had problems and running groups. . I DID NOT know that I’d be in many violent situations and that I opened myself up to see the corruption of our pharmaceutical world and mental health system. I’ve told many stories of my experience here on TikTok, and over the years I’ve learned not many people have a space to talk about their experience with the mental health system. To be clear, the psych ward isn’t some crazy house where things are constantly in a state of chaos. . Truth be told, some people come to psych institutions, get the help they need and are better for it. But those tough stories are the ones that stick with you. And having a 6 year career in psych, I’ve seen families destroyed and people pass away unnecessarily. But from the same people in those circumstances I’ve witnessed resilience, hope, perseverance and strength. The typa stuff you can’t teach but you live through and share. . The scariest thing for a lot of patients was meeting with the psychiatrist. The “All Knowing Psychiatrist” that would come in, see the patient for 2 minutes and somehow have a full diagnosis, with the expectation to take meds & antipsychotics. If the doc felt he had good reason to diagnose you and you refused to take meds, you may be court ordered against your will. I’ve seen it happen hundreds of times. . Imagine working a system where you are to have a heart for people that you may not be able to help? And at times, you feel like you’re helping a system that works against their interest? . In this video, “Psych Ward”, I put myself in front of a psychiatrist, and I share my story, just like I’ve watched many patients do before. Only this time, I get the final say.
