šWe Were Here Before Columbusš ~ This mural, located in Compton, at Centennial High Schoolāalma mater of legends like Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dreādepicts a powerful connection between two ancient civilizations: a Nubian-Egyptian and a Mayan. The gold cap crown on the Nubian-Egyptian is a symbol of his heritage, a crown also seen on the Olmec heads of Ancient America. The positioning in this artwork speaks volumes. The Nubian-Egyptian, seated higher, represents a teacher or guide, while the Mayan, seated below, symbolizes a student. Together, they reflect a historic relationship rooted in respect, knowledge exchange, and unity. This image captures a deeper truth about the Americas and its connection to my people of the Nileāthose of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Nubiaāand our shared history with the melanated, indigenous people of the Americas long before colonization. When we look beyond the narratives of slavery, we uncover evidence of our presence here before European invasions. Legally documented in the āNegro Law of South Carolinaā by John Belton O'Neall, our ancestors were classified as Ancient Berbers of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Nubia. The harmony that once existed was shattered by colonization, which brought a hierarchy rooted in white supremacy and erased the contributions of the original peoples. West Africans were not the first enslaved people in America. Spain sent North African MuslimsāMoors and Berbersāto these lands first, but Africans had already been here before any of this. Some African Americans today are descendants of the real Ancient Americans, whose legacy is etched into early sculptures, murals, and monuments.
