He believed celebrations of Christmas were consumed in “excess of Wine, in mad Mirth,” and would displease Jesus Christ. But furthermore, the law was passed to uphold the ever-important Puritan social hierarchy, and to discourage practices like “wassailing.” In 1681, the law was repealed under pressure from England—after 22 years! However, Christmas remained changed. For about 200 years, many people still went to work or school on Christmas Day, until President Ulysses S.
