The Committee was made up of foreign residents and Hawaiian Kingdom subjects of American descent. The coup was supported by American troops and warships, which landed to protect American interests.  Imprisonment In 1895, Queen Liliʻuokalani was arrested and imprisoned in her own throne room at ʻIolani Palace. She was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison, but her sentence was reduced to nearly eight months.  Abdication On January 24, 1895, Queen Liliʻuokalani was forced to abdicate the throne under threat of execution of her imprisoned supporters.  Annexation
