🏳️🌈 Honestly, I wonder if I would have been brave enough to come out 50 years ago. What about you? 😭 We all like to think we’d be strong and survive being out back then, but just a few days ago, I got a small taste of the intolerance that still exists today. I was in my dad’s hometown, getting work done on my vehicle. At a small café, surrounded by people who looked like they never left the 70s, this one creepy old man wouldn’t stop staring. Eventually, he came over, sat at my table uninvited, and started asking odd questions. I wasn’t giving him much, but when he asked what I did for work, I knew it was my moment. “I’m a lesbian matchmaker,” I said. His face crinkled up like he’d just smelled something awful. I smiled and added, “It’s quite a fulfilling career.” He started backing away, clearly disgusted. I felt relieved he was leaving, but I couldn’t resist asking, “What do you do?” He muttered, “I’m on social security,” and walked off. All because I’m gay. A hardworking, economy-contributing woman, dismissed for simply being myself. It made me think… what did lesbians go through 50 years ago? If it’s still hard now, imagine then. Let’s honor those who came before us and fought for the visibility and rights we have today.
