"Do I Quilt in Regular or Manual Mode?" Such a great question! Honestly, I think this comes down to personal preference. When I first taught myself how to machine quilt years ago, my machine only had two settings—manual or stitch-regulated. Every time I tried manual mode, I felt like I was totally out of control, so I never really practiced with it. But stitch-regulated mode? I loved how it felt from the start, and it just worked best for me. So I guess I’m an old dog—I stick with what I know! 😂 I know machines now have so many more features and settings, but I still go back to my stitch-regulated quilting, and most often, I’m quilting with my stitch length set at 13 SPI. By the way, how incredible is this quilt I’m getting ready to quilt for Errolyn? I can’t wait to get started! Of course, I’ll be sharing my full process soon in the PNQ Academy! "What If a Quilt Has Open Seams?" No worries! The way I approach a quilt can change just a little bit depending on how the seams are pressed. If the seams are pressed to one side, that creates a ditch—almost like a tiny shelf—and that’s where I love to place my stitches when I’m quilting in the ditch. But if the seams are pressed open and I still want that stitch-in-the-ditch look without actually stitching in the ditch, I’ll simply quilt just slightly to the side. It gives the same effect but without risking damage to those open seams. If you want to dive deeper into straight-line quilting, have you checked out my book, Visual Guide to Creative Straight Line Quilting? It’s packed with everything I wish I had known when I started ruler quilting, plus tons of design ideas for unlimited inspiration!
