What batting do you use to show off quilting and get that perfect puffiness? Comment "beginner" below and I'll send you info about my class & book! I love using wool batting for its beautiful loft and texture! It really makes the quilting pop. But here’s the thing—every quilter has their own favorite, and the only way to find yours is to experiment! Don’t be afraid to try different types and see what works best for you and your quilts. If you're just starting out or looking for inspiration, check out my Beginner’s Guide to Free-Motion Quilting class and book! "Tension issues? Shredding thread issues?" Ohhh, I’ve been there! Tension issues can be so frustrating, but most of the time, a small tweak fixes everything. First, I always double-check my threading (because even when I swear I did it right, sometimes I didn’t 😆). Then, I test on a scrap piece before jumping into my quilt. For shredding thread, my first thought is always the needle—wrong size or a dull needle can cause major headaches. I also check that my thread path is smooth and that nothing is catching along the way. Quilting should be fun, not stressful! If you're struggling, take a deep breath, check the basics, and keep going—you've got this! 💪✨ Did you know? I share all my best quilting tips inside PNQ Academy—with over 160+ videos (and more added every month), there’s endless inspiration waiting for you! Do you use a lighter-weight thread when you stitch in the ditch? 🤔 Great question! I don’t—I love using SoFine! thread for almost all of my machine quilting, and in my bobbin, I almost always go with pre-wound SuperBobs. ✨ I can see the benefit of a lighter-weight thread if you're doing all the stitch-in-the-ditch work first. But the way I quilt—top to bottom, left to right—I stitch in the ditch as I go. And honestly? I'd probably forget to switch threads somewhere along the way! 😂 One thing I do love? The way my threads blend so beautifully into my quilting! 😍 P.S. Did you know I drop a free machine quilting video tutorial every Monday? "What is this machine called?" This is my Gammill 22" Longarm Quilting Machine on a 10' table. It’s what I use to stitch together the three layers of a quilt—the top, batting, and backing—through the art of machine quilting. Machine quilting has been around for over a century, evolving from early sewing machines to today’s advanced longarms and domestic machines. While quilting was traditionally done by hand, the introduction of machine quilting allowed for greater precision, creativity, and efficiency, transforming the way quilts are made. I’ve been a longarm quilter for hire for the past 18 years, spending 15 of those years teaching and sharing my passion with others. For about a decade, I traveled across the United States and Canada, teaching quilters how to quilt like me. We all start somewhere! If you're looking to learn more, check out my class and book, Beginner’s Guide to Free-Motion Quilting, where I walk you through over 50 quilting motifs to help you build confidence in your quilting journey. Which is your go-to ruler if you had to pick just one? This is a great question! Hands down, my most used and favorite ruler is the Mini 4-N-1 Machine Quilting Ruler, especially with the Piece N Quilt PopSocket Ruler Grip attached to the top. I love the size, the feel, and the versatility! It has three different curves plus a straight edge that’s perfect for straight-line quilting. It just fits so well in my hand, and I find myself reaching for it all the time! If you’re quilting on a sit-down machine, this is the ruler I always recommend—it’s the perfect size for control and precision! Want to dive deeper into ruler quilting? In my book, Visual Guide to Creative Straight Line Quilting, we start with the basics of quilting with rulers, then explore over 30 straight-line designs—from borders to background fillers and block ideas. It’s the best place to start if you want to master ruler quilting!
