#ReadingComprehension: Learn, practice, understand! Videos, tips, strategies, quizzes. Decode texts, improve skills, build vocabulary. Enhance your understanding! Study hacks and book recommendations.
Literacy instruction is incomplete without CONTENT! Background knowledge and vocabulary are huge predictors of reading comprehension. In fact, most reading conprehension "strategies" cannot be used without the application of background knowledge (think: activating prior knowledge or making text to world connections). This is a huge part of Science of Reading research. Teaching science and social studies IS teaching reading, and removing meaningful science and social studies instruction from schools will continue to contribute to illiteracy. Great people to learn from regarding this topic are Natalie Wexler, Daniel Willingham, and Hugh Catts. #readingcomprehension #scienceandsocialstudies #education #literacy #scienceofreading #sor #readingteacher #learntoread #knowledgematters

Food for thought—literally! While teaching, I had to pause to remind a couple of students to stop eating. But the real takeaway? A game-changing way to help students remember the difference between theme and summary! I showed them that if you write out theme (T-H-E-M-E), you can break it down into T-H-E + M-E and then add S-S-A-G-E, forming THE MESSAGE! This simple trick made it so much easier for my students to grasp that theme is the message of the story. We applied this to Mulan, discussing both its theme and summary. And just when I thought class was back on track… I realized more than one student had been sneaking snacks. A true food for thought lesson in more ways than one! #Theme #Summary #ThemeVsSummary #ELA #MiddleSchoolELA #LiteratureLesson #ReadingComprehension #EnglishLesson #WritingSkills #TeachingTips #TeachingLiterature #GrammarLesson #LanguageArts #LearnEnglish #ESLLesson #EnglishVocabulary #ClassroomFun #EducationMatters #TeacherLife #MiddleSchoolTeacher #ELAInstruction #ReadingSkills #StoryAnalysis #ThemeInLiterature #Summarizing #TeachingStrategies #StudentEngagement #FoodForThought #TeachersOfTikTok

Sometimes reading struggles don't start to really appear until upper elementary. This is a red flag about the quality of instruction students received in early elementary. When we get literacy right in Kindergarten and 1st, we make a HUGE impact in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and beyond. Here's what the research says we need to be doing: 1. Explicit phonics instruction that follows a scope & sequence. This should be cumulative and embedded in the books students are actually practicing learning to read with. Explicit instruction in morphology, spelling, and grammar/syntax is so important too! "Gains from a great, and mostly free comprehensive phonics program (UFLI) are equivalent to 8 moths of additional instruction for kindergartners, and almost a year-and-a-half extra instruction for 1st graders." 2. Solid knowledge building content! Students need science and social studies in depth and breadth to gain the knowledge needed for the reading comprehension required of more advanced texts. The recent NAEP score drop continues to be abysmal, and Natalie Wexler mentions in her most recent blog post that it's important to remember NAEP is a test of reading COMPREHENSION. If student's aren't exposed to rich content and aligned writing instruction, reading comprehension will continue to suffer. Both of these pieces (1. Decoding & 2. Language Comprehension) are foundational pieces of the simple view of reading. We need to be using structured literacy practices and materials to explicitly teach decoding from sounds to syllables to morphology as well as to encoding to really solidify that automaticity! We also need to be intentional about vocab and background knowledge in addition to things like grammar/sentence structure! #scienceofreading #sor #nataliewexler #4thgradeslump #literacyandjusticeforall #untileveryonecanread #decoding #languagecomprehension #slp #readingcomprehension #structuredliteracy #phonics #supportallreaders #righttoread #readingisacivilright #naepscores #nationsreportcard #education

Este texto es del nivel B2 porque usa estructuras y vocabulario que solo se retienen con exposición real al idioma. No es para quien memorizó reglas y listas, sino para quien aprendió comunicando e interactuando. Things I mentioned/alluded to: * National Literacy Institute (for statistic) * The simple view of reading (for the equation) * Scarborough’s Reading Rope (goes through the skills—nice visual of the skills needed!) The equation: Decoding/word recognition x language comprehension = reading comprehension The vocab: * decoding/word recognition (do I know that these are letters, what these letters are, that they make these sounds, and that these letters in this order spell the word balloon?)—no meaning made here! Just being able to read the words * background knowledge (do I know anything about this subject? Do I need to know about it before reading this text? How can I find that information in a way that taps into what’s already in my mental filing cabinet?) * vocabulary knowledge (do I know what this word means? Do I know what it means in THIS context?) * language structures (do I know that these words in this order are telling me more about this thing over here?) * literacy knowledge (do I know how to navigate this KIND of text? This genre? Do I know how to use the features of the text? Do I know, for example, that processing satire would be different from nonfiction?) * reading comprehension (did I understand what I just read?) If you need more examples, how to teach them, or more broken down explanations, I’m more than happy to help. #englishteacher #reading #readingisfundamental #readingcomprehension #literacy #fyp
