Coast Redwood trees (Sequoia sempervirens) have unique adaptations which allow them to regenerate new growth if disaster strikes. Basal burls are essentially big, knobby storage units that can resprout vigorously if the main trunk were to break in a storm, be severely burned, or decline in other ways. Redwoods can also form burls higher up along their trunk to help seal over wounds from previous injuries. Sometimes, these injuries can also result in what's called a reiteration, where a redwood "clone" sprouts out, leaving a unique appearance on some ancient specimens. Sadly, these burls are sometimes poached and cut off by people wanting to sell their intricately complex wood. These wounds leave giant wounds on the tree which can weaken them structurally and leave them susceptible to pathogenic fungi and insect infestations. Eucalyptus trees are invasive in California and a sign of the colonization of native land. These trees were only planted after most of the native old growth redwoods and oak trees were already logged. They were seen as a cash crop. And now these trees are crashing biodiversity in a state known as a global biodiversity hotspot. Only 1% of the old growth forest remains in Sonoma county, two groves are left. where this human planted invasive forest is only one old growth redwood tree remains. Eucalyptus has extremely shallow roots and blow over easy in winter storms. Native wildlife does not benefit from these trees and eucalyptus is the biggest wildfire threat in the state of California. Almost all of the old growth redwood forest has been logged. Only 4% remains in Northern California. Where I am now in Sonoma county only 2% of the old growth redwoods are left standing after colonization. This area was literally called stump town usa. Protecting the mature and old growth forests in North America should be a number 1 priority. Even to this day thousands of acres of old growth are slated to be logged for profit. Today we are hiking in a second growth redwood forest that has been clear cut logged at least 3 times. Sadly almost all of the forests you’ll see in Sonoma county are second growth. The tree stumps tell the story for Mother Nature if you just look. Some of these coastal redwood trees were over 2 thousand years old when they were logged to build cities like San Francisco during the gold rush. One of the coolest trees I’ve ever seen in my life is a redwood here that was logged many times. It’s a amazing example of how resilient coastal redwood trees are , even after being logged , burning in a fire , and years of drought. This redwood is alive and thriving while being a nurse stump.
