#ResourceGuarding highlights dogs' protective behavior over their possessions. It educates pet owners on recognizing, addressing, and preventing aggression, fostering safer environments, and promoting positive reinforcement training methods for better canine behavior.
Replying to @$vet PLEASE READšŸ‘‡ Resource guarding is normal, barking & growling = normal šŸ‘‡ So we donā€™t want to *stop*these behaviors because if we do, we remove their ability to communicate discomfort. And that is how we end up getting bitā€¦ BUT we do want to teach our dogs reasonable responses & how to make good decisions for themselves (eg moving away when worried instead of biting, etc) I never want my dogs to think that when I approach they lose something. Me approaching should always = positive feelings whenever possible Prevention is key, but my priority (learned from professionals) is changing my dogā€™s emotional response to me being near her when she has something of value Hereā€™s how I did this game (again, always work with a professional): 1ļøāƒ£: When Aura had something she valued (food, toy, chew) Iā€™d toss higher value food or treats in her direction, only being close enough to not get a reaction out of her. Remember, this is a low pressure positive reinforcement ā€œgame,ā€ where weā€™re starting to teach our dog that when we approach, ONLY good things happen. I practice each step for several days, with 5-10 treats at a time. Short sessions. 2ļøāƒ£: I toss treats as I walk by. No cue, no pressure, just walk and toss. Walk & toss (with 5-10 treats then leave her alone) 3ļøāƒ£: Introduce the ā€œtrade it outā€ cue. Mine is ā€œcan I have that.ā€ I toss a higher value treat away, remove her food bowl, then give it back 4ļøāƒ£: My favorite, because itā€™s how we should end every interaction with a being. Better than we found it! I trade it outā€ and before I give it back, I add even better treats to it, to MAKE IT BETTER!! I practice this just a few times then I leave her alone to enjoy it. We practice this a lot in puppy class with the local trainers I work with @goroguedogtrainingllc , and they remind pet parents that even if your dog isnā€™t demonstrating resource guarding tendencies now - itā€™s important to practice to avoid it Again, every dog is different. Since Iā€™ve gotten Lottie, Iā€™ve realized how much household management with two terriers is recognizing potential sources of conflict before they escalate. Lottieā€™s in many ways less possesive than Tilney, but she does have things she wants! #resourceguarding #jackrussell #terrier #dogbehavior #DogTraining #terriersoftiktok

After my other dog passed. I felt very passionately that Saint needed a dog housemate. While they play and have fun, Saint has developed some behaviors he never did before and did not do with the previous dog. This is one of them, resource guarding. He wouldn't dare do that to my bully because my bully was... well... a bully and always wanted all the smoke. Magic is very "submissive" to Saint. Notice how she still does not move here, also not the best at listening. Now before all the dog trainers come at me, yes I know I shouldn't allow Saint on the couch, and it's only occasional like today I just needed some extra love and let him up, and he quickly reminded me why I can't allow him up. I kicked him off after this, but I wanted to record this to remind everyone who wants a dog for their other dog... your dog may not need it, or even want it. I'm just speaking for my dog and our experience since adding in a new dog, of course every household and dog is different. #dogsofttiktok #doginfluencer #resourceguarding #multidoghousehold

Early in our time together, everything felt tentative and risky. As our bond grew so did a trust. Everything I did was devoid of pressure or conflict. I never tried to overpower or control. That opened the door to less anger, less force for him. #rescuedog #shelterdog #dogsvideo #resourceguarding #dogs #dogtrainer #trainingwithoutconflict
šŸŽ¾ Resource Guarding in a Multi-Dog Household šŸŽ¾ Being proactive and knowing which situations set the stage for problematic and potentially dangerous behavior are key to household harmony. My Cane Corso, Vetiver, has stolen toys from the other dogs in our household and bared teeth over them. We are vigilant of our dogsā€™ interactions, so once I saw this happen a couple of times I knew I needed to prioritize being more proactive so she wouldnā€™t feel the need to escalate her behavior. By reinforcing behaviors incompatible with toy stealing, Iā€™ve been stacking Vetiā€™s ā€œbehavioral deckā€ in our favor of chillaxing while another dog in our household is interacting with a toy. āš ļø If youā€™re ever concerned that your dogā€™s behavior could be dangerous, hire the help of a certified professional trainer, behavior consultant, or veterinary behaviorist. Internet tips do not replace professional guidance! āš ļø #caninereinforced #DogTraining #dogtrainingtips #resourceguarding #canecorso #canecorsooftiktok #canecorsotraining #certifieddogtrainer
