January 6th, 2025 — On this day, four years ago (Jan 6th, 2021), police officers were brutally assaulted while bravely defending the United States Capitol. They were p.nched, tackled, t.sed, and attacked with chemical agents that burned their eyes and skin. The attack disrupted a joint session of Congress convened to certify the results of the presidential election of 2020, which Trump had lost to his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden. Because its object was to prevent a legitimate president-elect from assuming office, the attack was widely regarded as an insurrection or attempted coup d’état. January 6 was a violent attack on the law enforcement officers defending the Capitol, and it was an unprecedented attack on a cornerstone of our system of government — the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to the next. Today, I am thinking of the officers who still bear the scars of that day as well as the loved ones of the five officers who lost their lives in the line of duty as a result of what happened to them on January 6, 2021. More than 1,500 people across the U.S. have been charged with federal crimes related to the deadly riot. Hundreds of people who did not engage in destruction or violence were charged only with misdemeanor offenses for entering the Capitol illegally. Others were charged with felony offenses, including assault for beating police officers. Leaders of the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys extremist groups were convicted of seditious conspiracy for what prosecutors described as plots to use violence to stop the peaceful transfer of power from Trump, a Republican, to Joe Biden, a Democrat. #january6thcommission #congress #uscapitol #attack #trump #protest #riots #republican #democrat #joebiden #donaldtrump #anniversary #uscapitolattack #jan62021 #commission #arrests #counterterrorism #antiterrisom #trumpsupporters #trump2024
