👉🏽 I prefer to teach “Drop it” through play. It’s more enjoyable and less serious. However, I have no problem putting this type of pressure on a dog that is grabbing items and guarding them when we try to take them back. As I wrote in the video, the best way to address this, first and foremost, is better supervision and management. But some dogs will grab anything. “Leave it” is also a great thing to teach but ultimately you (and my clients in the video) need to know how to get an item from your dog in a straightforward, non confrontational manner that doesn’t involve trading anything in the event that your dog gets a hold of something. Most dogs are too smart for trades. They’ll end up grabbing items to initiate a trade. They’re not dumb.
