Chapter 3: The Shard and the Serpent (Chapters 1 & 2 posted previously) The shard hummed. A low vibration. Threading through my ribs. Like a second heartbeat. Three days—at least. Time felt strange. Warped. The shadows were deep. The air damp. Water dripped in the distance. A metronome in the stillness. The shard pulled. Not words. Not visions. Just tugs. Invisible threads. Then I heard it. A hiss. Sharp. Cutting through the hum. Silk over stone. “Lilith…” The voice slithered. Soft. Old. I froze. “Who’s there?” The hiss again. The Serpent. Its scales gleamed. Black and gold. Eyes—golden. Slit-pupiled. Fixated. It spoke, but no words. It spoke in my mind. “Do you know where you are, little flame?” I stepped back. “You know what I carry.” The Serpent tilted its head. “Yes. I feel it.” It slithered closer. “Want?” it hissed. “I offer.” “Offer what?” “Knowledge. Truth. Clarity.” The shard pulsed. A bell underwater. “I’m no adversary, Lilith,” the Serpent said. “I am… older than their squabbles.” “A guide,” it whispered. “Or a liar. You choose.” “What if I listen?” “Then you will see.” The world blurred. Shadows tearing. Weightless. We were somewhere else. A cracked sky. Brittle ground. Shadows wandering. “The aftermath of ignorance,” the Serpent hissed. “When they ignored the consequences.” “They’re lost,” I said. “Lost. Forgotten,” it replied. “They wait.” “And who am I to them?” “You are the bridge, Lilith.” The shard flared. Brighter. Sharper. Back in the cave. The shadows softened. The Serpent coiled before me. “Walk forward,” it whispered. “The shard will guide you.” Knowledge is a blade. Wield it wisely. The Serpent was gone. The shard pulsed, steady. I walked forward. Because now… I had seen. End of Chapter 3 Can’t wait for Chapter 4? Then check out the other chapters and podcasts “Lilith” and other great stories, all free, on Andrew’s Substack, Linktree in Bio.
