It is approaching the end of 2024 and we ask that you consider helping us reach our year-end goals to continue to
#SaveWildlife in WNC year after year. In April, we received a call that we never would have anticipated— two black bear cubs had been taken out of their tree for a group of people to snap photos and videos with as they took selfies, most likely for social media attention. One of the two was able to get aways as soon as it was placed down and had the opportunity to escape, suspected to have reunited with mom. The other was unable to escape following the extreme stress endured from the handling. As the only certified black bear cub rehabilitation center in Western North Carolina, we received the call that this cub needed our help and would arrive with the state biologist. After months of feedings, cleanings, introduction to other orphan cubs, and observation to ensure she was ready, she was able to be released in October to her new home! With your help, we can continue to help our bears and keep them wild. Not just through rehabilitation efforts, but also to educate the public. The “Selfie Cub” incident should have never happened and we aim to spread education as far and wide as possible to ensure just that. If you can, please consider donating to Appalachian Wildlife Refuge— either through the link in our bio or on our website. Every little bit counts so we can rescue, rehabilitate, and release our local critters that make our Appalachian region such a beautiful place.
