There are so many wonderful ways to bond with your Foxhound, but these are a few of my favorites! To build your relationship with your Foxhound, try doing some activities that engage their natural instincts! American Foxhounds are historically bred to hunt, using their nose to find game. They do this for hours on end, loping alongside horses for many miles. It’s no surprise that this breed enjoys sniffing, chasing small animals and has impressive endurance and problem solving skills. To engage these natural instincts these make some great enrichment activities for them: • SLOW SNIFFY WALKS: Sniffy walks engage that hound dog nose. Dogs have a strong sense of smell and take in a lot of information through their noses, and scent hounds do most of all. Allowing them to sniff engages that instinct, works their brain, and can be a calming activity for some dogs. • HIKING: Hiking is a great enrichment activity for Foxhounds because it introduces them to novel smells and engages their body more. • BARN HUNT: Dog sports are a great way to bond with your dog because you need to work as a team and encourage each other to succeed. Barn Hunt is a great sport for hounds because it uses their sniffing and problem solving instincts with a prey animal. • BIKEJORING: Bikejoring is an awesome sport for Foxhounds, especially younger ones, because it provides an outlet for their instinct to distance run. Plus it’s great exercise for you too! I find that this sport works best when you pair a hound with a non-hound that won’t be as distracted by scents along the way. • FAST CAT: Fast CAT is a great activity for any dog! This 100-yard sprint is a chance for dogs to run and chase prey. While Foxhounds aren’t built to sprint, it still engages that need to run, and are faster than you’d think! The key to a strong relationship with your dog is finding activities that you enjoy doing together. Any dog can do almost any activity, but these are a few of my favorites for Foxhounds! #foxhound #americanfoxhound #scenthound #dogenrichment #dogenrichmentactivities #dogsports #hounddognation #hounddog #hikingwithdogs #barnhunt #bikejoring #drylandmushing #fastcat
