What you have to realize about this post 👇  I was that guy 🙈  Most of my reels on avoidants are drawn from personal experience (with added hyperbole for the laughs) It took a lot of pain for me to get to where I’m at today. Growing up in a dysfunctional environment laid the foundation for my fearful avoidant tendencies. Early heartbreaks → walling off my heart and “settling” in a relationship that grew increasingly unhealthy, always with one foot out the door and constantly questioning whether to stay or leave 😔  I didn’t trust myself or anyone else. I was disconnected from my intuition. I didn’t know how to feel any emotion except anger. I numbed my pain with cannabis 🫥 The hard truth is: I had to go through this to get to where I am today… If you’d shown me the tools that I have today when I was stuck in ambivalence and addiction, I would’ve rejected them. I wasn’t ready – I was too scared. But then came the tipping point… When the pain of staying the same outweighed the fear of change. That’s when I TRULY opened up to taking radical responsibility for my own healing ❤️‍🩹  Years later, I’m primarily secure with both feet in a healthy, thriving relationship and helping avoidants overcome the pain, guilt and shame at the root of their relationship patterns. I share this content not to pressure you to change if you’re not ready… But to add drops in the bucket of your awareness, to nudge you closer to that moment when you ARE ready to leap into a new paradigm of relationships—for yourself, and for your future partners. The best way to support an avoidant 👇  Always reassure them of their freedom of space and choice 🔑  In fact, these are best relationship practices no matter who you’re with, but they’re particularly important to avoidants. But I’m not saying to perpetually abandon yourself to make it work with someone who is not willing to meet you halfway 👈 As the avoidant, your job is to lean into the discomfort of connection instead of silencing yourself or retreating 🫥 When you feel triggered by emotionality, someone depending on you, or them asking what you need or how you’d like to be supported… Your next action is to speak up for what you’re noticing internally 🤔  Whether that’s physiological sensations, defensiveness, withdrawal, it doesn’t matter. Just name it. This is where your breath comes in handy. Ultimately, you want to get a handle on these patterns before they take you over.  Before you’re years into a relationship and crippled with bubbling resentment and mounting uncertainty… Before you start dating again after you leave a relationship… In order to create and commit to the healthy, secure relationship I know you want deep down You have to love and trust yourself. I thought I had found my person. I had never loved anyone at that depth or capacity before and I honestly didn’t even know I could. The betrayal you feel when something you saw as beautiful ends is so hard to comprehend- it was never supposed to go like this. It was forever, right? But I know now that wasn’t my person, because my person would never let me get away. It wasn’t meaningless and I learned so much about myself during it, and also healed parts of me during it as well. So I’m trying to be grateful for what it was. But, I never expected to be 41 and single - especially as a self proclaimed lover girl. But I’m not willing to settle for less than I’m able to give in a relationship- that’s why I believe I have yet to find it (along with some childhood trauma I’ve now dealt with 🤣). I get discouraged that my person isn’t out there, but then I remember than I am out there. And if I exist, then someone like me must also exist- we just haven’t found each other yet.
