I wish I could have been better prepared for this moment. You never know if this could happen to your pet and here is what you need to know: - Stay calm: Crying or yelling can further distress them - Protect your dog: Move your dog to a safe area, like the floor, and clear the space around them. - Time or videotape the seizure: your vet will need this information and it’s really hard to recall unless you have notes or video. - Dim the lights: Make the room as quiet and cool as possible. - Avoid touching your dog: External distractions can make a seizure longer. You will want to hold them but it’s best not to. - Don't put anything in your dog's mouth: You could get bitten, and it could make it hard for your dog to breathe. - After the seizure: Keep your dog in a safe area and monitor them until they're back to normal. This could take up to two hours. - Call your vet: Call your vet or an emergency vet, even if your dog seems to be recovering normally. Let your vet know the duration of the seizure and any behaviors you observed. -Take them to a pet hospital IF: the seizure lasts more than 5 mins, or starts back up again. Note, the pre seizure signs do not count as the actual seizure. - Comfort your dog: let them hear your voice. Tell them it’s ok. They will be spooked afterwards and they want their mom and/or dad.
