A cute little Martha Stewart chicken coop with a few hens had always been on my bucket list for the house but years back I came up with all sorts of excuses on why the timing was never right. Then on March 14, 2020, I woke up and told hubby, ‘We’re going to tractor supply and getting chickens’. Our first flock was 6 meat birds and since I knew nothing about chickens at this point I just listened to the old man also buying chicks that this was a hearty dual purpose bird. We were so unprepared we didn’t even have a brooder box or a coop ready. So they were in a box in a bathroom in our barn. We built a little brooder but they grew out of that fast! Then we got the idea to use the old outdoor dog run inside the garage lined with cardboard boxes and tyvek. That was they were contained and the dog couldn’t get in at them. It wasn’t long before I made another trip to tractor supply and brought a few more home in using 2 little ducks. We had the best summer learning how to tend to them and setting up an outdoor run area. The dog crate got moved back behind the barn and we started learning how to develop an area they were safe and protected in. #chickens #chickencommunity #backyardchickens #fresheggs #hens #flockfamily #raisingchickens #chickensofinstagram #homesteading #helpful #tipsandtricks #chickentending #animaltherapy #chickentherapy #featheredfriends #sendingsmiles ✌️❤️🤗🐓
When deciding on a coop location be sure to take winter weather into consideration. Remembering that snows needs to be removed to be able to get back to the coop run to collect eggs and refill waterers even on the snowiest days. Our coop is close enough to our home for easy access and not too much shoveling in the winter. It’s good to have adequate drainage especially when the snow starts melting to prevent muddy conditions which will end up on fresh eggs. Having the coop run protected from predators and wind exposure is essential through winter. #homesteading #winterchickencare #backyardchivkens #chickenlife #chickenkeeping #fresheggs #sustainableliving #chickencoop #chickenplanning #sendingsmiles ✌️❤️🤗🐓
