Putting Onyx, our Beloved 35 yr old Gelding, out to Pasture for the last time. Onyx passed away last week, due to complications of Aspiration Pneumonia, Following a Grain choke. Nicknamed "the Shark" he lived up to his name and snuck into the Sheep pen and stole some of their hard grain. A prior Choke survivor with Heaves, He was not able to recover from the complications that arose. He came to us an emaciated, "bag of bones" rescue 5 years ago. we had the vet out, for what we were sure would be a euthanasia call. She wanted to try a 90 day refeeding program, and took care of his teeth. we followed the plan to the letter, and right before winter, Onyx passed his physical Exam. And then you see it. That little nod of acknowledgement. The “thank you” that is spoken without words. There are horses like Keeper who would live in my pocket. And then there are horses like sweet Kane. Kane’s abusive was apparent from the day I met him and the clear mistrust in his eyes. Kane is not a touchy, feely boy. He doesn’t mind pets and scratches, but he doesn’t want hugs. His heart has been locked away.. to protect itself.. his battle wounds evident on his beautiful, old gray face. As I was walking around at sunset, smiling at all the kids enjoying the warmer winter air.. I felt a gaze on me. There was Kane. Just staring through my soul. His eyes never left me and you could feel his gratitude flowing through his elder body. This was his thank you. Oh how those gray faces grip my heart ❤️ . . Thank you HHHH family for helping give lives like Kane’s the retirement they so deserve. I know this isn’t easy. Today is $2 Tuesday for hay and farrier. This is the back bone of our organization. As long as we can continue raising the funds for our weekly overhead bills and keep bellies and tushies fat and happy.. we can continue on in our mission of saving lives. . . One of my favorite transformations ❤️ Harrison! Happy 2 year rescueversary Harrison. When Harrison first came to us he was so traumatized.. he was terrified of being touched and he would visibly shake with fear when I approached him. His body was so sunken in, you would have thought he was near the end of his life. But as Harrison started to fill out.. those walls began to lower.. and he slowly let love in.. melting away his “grumpy grandpa” exterior. . . Transformations like Harrison’s are possible because of you all-our HHHH family. Feeding these big kids is no easy task, especially in winter months when everyone is burning more calories to stay warm. Today is our five dollar Friday for feed- and as you know this is a vital part of our organization. Each week we go through approx $1,700 in grain alone, with each bag being $25.
