If you love fun sensory bins but think there is no way you could do them because your kid would just make a giant mess, I’m here to tell you you definitely can! Here are some tips… ✨ Start small. Only put a small amount of sensory filler in a bin, you don’t need to fill a bin to the brim. ✨ Make sure there is a purpose. Toddlers find joy in purposeful play. If there is no point or they don’t know how to play then they will get bored and do what kids do best…make a mess. ✨ Choose materials intentionally. Following up on the last tip choosing materials intentionally will help make the bin feel more purposeful. Just as an example, if it is a bin for counting, include some numbers. ✨ Set boundaries and follow through. When they are first learning to use new materials they will need close supervision and guidance. Set the boundary (“keep the rice in the bin” “Sand is for your hands not your mouth” etc.). Give them one reminder and then put it away. Deal with the tantrum now and you’ll appreciate it later when they can play nicely on their own. And to me, the mess is totally worth the 20 minutes of calm. Let me know if you have a specific struggle to work through or questions I could help you with.
