Lainey spends the early afternoon getting herself ready, and looking as perfect as she possibly can while a very nervous Gabriel waits on her to meet him. Before heading out, she’s stopped by Sage who playfully questions where she’s off to. “I’m actually going to meet Gabriel for coffee down the road” Lainey answers her. “Really? How cute! Be careful though, he’s a wild one.” Sage jokes with a wink. As they sit and enjoy their coffees, surrounded by the sights and smells of the holiday season, Gabe feels his nerves begin to settle more and more. Lainey watches the way his eyes slightly avoid her gaze as she listens to him speak, his mouth fixed in a sort of half smile. She can tell he’s nervous but she finds it endearing. After spending a few hours together, Gabriel walks Lainey home. Despite the blustery weather, neither her nor Gabe are quite ready to say their goodbyes just yet. They sit on the parts of the bench that have not yet been covered by the icy snowfall & talk for a few minutes more. It’s Christmas Eve & everyone has gathered at the Howell home. It’s an evening filled with holiday cookies, gift giving, laughter, & Christmas magic. Gabriel, hesitant to show up but jumping at the opportunity to see his girls after so long, has also joined in on the holiday festivities. He spends his evening avoiding Odessa as much as he can, but a few passing glances are inevitable in such close proximity. Odessa watches Gabriel through the night as he interacts with her siblings. She can feel a sense of jealousy almost burning in her chest. Then to see how much her daughters cling to him after not seeing him for so long just intensifies that already burning sensation. It’s not until she overhears an unfamiliar but grating voice coming from her sister’s phone that she really starts to feel a sense of hatred. It’s Lainey on the other end wishing Sage, Cove, & Selene a Merry Christmas. Odessa’s eyes couldn’t roll far enough back in her head if she tried. That’s when she notices Gabe make his way out the back door. Gabriel wakes up to a cold, gray room. His head throbs with every beat of his heart, feeling like a ten penny nail is piercing his skull. It’s silent except for the occasional gust of wind from outside. Begrudgingly, he leans on his elbows & pushes himself up, but when he opens his eyes he realizes that…this is not his bedroom. As he sits on the edge of his ex fiancé’s bed, hoping that he’s actually not awake yet, he looks over his shoulder to see Odessa’s curves illuminated by the soft, winter morning light.
