Such a great song. Also I love this snare. It’s only $100 and it’s called The Kraken by PDP. This is a fun drum sound. The snare drum is so up front and has such a dry crunchy ghost note thing, but still opens up with a nice tone / roundness on the backbeats. It goes without saying that Chad Smith is one of the greatest drummers ever. His style is so raw and he’s one of those players that can be both a creative band member, and also a great session musician. I’ve always been interested in how he gets his hi hats to sound the way they do. It’s like they’re closed but still sloshy and open. They have so much breath and movement. I figured out it’s because of how extreme his left foot bounce is when he plays. Even when the hi hats are closed, he’s still opening them slightly almost always and the result is a ton of slosh and looseness. It’s super musical. This drum mix was a fun one. Pretty standard EQ and compression on most channels. There’s Soundtoys Radiator and some UADx Distressor on the drum bus to give it some top end excitement and life. Doing these videos has given me a renewed appreciation for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their music is timeless and so listenable without being stale or cheesy. This has always been one of my favorite RHCP songs and was a super fun drum cover to do. #drummer #drumming #drumcover #recordingdrums #rockdrummer #sessiondrummer #recordingstudio #drumbeat #drumsdrumsdrums #musiciansontiktok #musiciansoftiktok #drumtok #snare #songcover #songcovers #millenialmusic #pdpdrums Drum cover Song cover Best song cover Drum beat Rock drummer Drum recording Recording studio Drum mix Producer

As we all know when it comes to drums, it’s the little things that can make life a little easier. Consistently positioning your snare drum is one of those things. Most drummers don’t have the luxury of setting up a kit once and being able to leave it up for long periods. The majority of drummers are setting up and tearing down a kit several nights a week. Even if you don’t, you are at least swapping out snare drums on your kit or at specific gigs. What if I told you with a simple strip of gaffer tape you can eliminate the guesswork of positioning your snare drum perfectly the way you like it every time? That’s what this drum hack does. After you have positioned your snare drum the way you like it, take a small strip of gaffer tape and put it on one of the rubber sleeves on the basket. Then take a small piece of gaffer tape and stick it on the shell lined up with the piece on the rubber sleeves you just put on. That it!! Now you can consistently place your snare drum to the perfect spot at every gig without ever having to fidget with it. Give it a try. You might be surprised at how well it works. What do you guys think? Do you have a specific way you position your snare drum? Have you ever thought to use this hack? Leave a comment. Let’s talk about it! Stay creative, and have a great rest of the week. Love you, guys!! Okay. I mean… 🤣🥁🤓 Don’t worry - I’m not in credit card debt on this collection. The snare drums you see are only a couple of rows of ones we have access to at work! So many fantastic options from many well-known brands! We even got a Keplinger x Ayotte stainless steel snare with wood hoops. Man, I love working here! Thank you for dropping by. Taking the new PDP 3.5x13 Kraken snare for a spin. This drum is mega budget friendly and does some really cool things. It’s super aggressive when cranked up, and also does the dry short 70’s thing well. Also, a little kick drum distortion never hurts. I went through the whole tuning range with this drum and was pleasantly surprised. I’ve found that piccolo snares often do the dry fast 70’s Fleetwood Mac thing pretty well and this one definitely had a cool take on it. I ended up getting that sound with a BFSD quesadilla and dialing in the snare tension just right. It had a really nice quick low end thump with all the top end sizzle you would want for that vibe. I’m gonna be doing a whole snare tuning video with this drum taking it from super low to super high with some interesting things in between. Overall a very cool snare. #pdpdrums #pdp #teampacificdrums #drummer #drumming #drumcover #recordingdrums #rockdrummer #sessiondrummer #recordingstudio #drumbeat #drumsdrumsdrums #musiciansontiktok #musiciansoftiktok #drumtok #snare #snaredrum

As a drum tech, backline tech, and drummer, I like having gear that makes sense for everything I do. And I know I’m not the only one who has struggled with over-tightened wing nuts on hardware or having a piece of hardware slip because it wasn’t tight enough. The old-school way of doing this was to use drumsticks, your hands, or a wrench to cinch down the wing nut. After getting introduced to this company by a good friend, I feel this tool has eliminated that struggle. It allows you to effectively tighten any wing nut on your kit and lock it down so you are secure and ready for the gig. I know, I know, less talking and more specs and features. Let’s get into it! The Wing Thing features & specs (pulled from Morgenstein Tool’s website): “Wing Thing is the world’s first practical, dependable wingnut adjustment tool created especially for drummers, percussionists, drum techs, and professional stage crew. * CNC machined ONLY in the USA of 6061 aluminum, then hard-coated in Detroit with respect for our environment and concerns for climate change. * Handled and shipped utilizing zero disposable plastics and an absolute minimum of biodegradable packaging. * Designed to be kind to your precious drum hardware. * Comes with a lifetime guarantee. * Wing Thing is the specialty tool drummers have needed since the invention of the wingnut! As we all know, when it comes to drums, the sounds we create are not just limited to the traditional tools. The snare drum sound is one of those things. You would be surprised at what you can get to sound like a snare drum without even using the snare wires. I saw this hack in a video on social media, and I had to try it. In the example, they put coffee beans in a snare drum with only one head on it and shook it up and down to get this interesting groosh sound. That got me thinking about what type of sound I would get if I put both drum heads on a snare drum while having coffee beans inside and played it like normal. The sound created was quite interesting! The only way I can describe it is a snappy yet gooshy sound. In hindsight, I would have gotten a more traditional sound if I had used a coated drumhead, but I wanted to do this with a clear drumhead. I'm so glad I gave this a try because now it adds another tool in the mental toolbox to help create. Give it a try. You might be surprised at how well it works. What do you guys think? Have you ever experimented with uniquely getting snare sounds? Have you ever thought to use this hack? Leave a comment. Let’s talk about it! Stay creative, and have a great rest of the week. This particular tuning has started to become a favorite of mine. Trying it with this 15” x 6” Maple shell with a new Evans UV2 on it! Let’s get into it. This tuning is built on a well-tuned snare side head and properly tensioned snare wires. With that said, the snare side head is tight and pretty close to glass. The snare wires have an appropriate amount of tension that is not too tight or loose and allows the snare wires to breathe and not sound choked! This process allows the snare drum to have sensitivity and articulation while in this higher tuning. The batter-side tuning is a little more involved. For starters, I equally “finger-tighten” the tension rods as tight as possible until I can’t turn them anymore with the nub of these two Snareweight speedy drum keys. After the figure-tightening, I use quarter turns to add more tension to the drum. This technique provides enough tension on the drum head and ensures you hear the shell and drum head working together. The secret sauce for this process is the drum key technique and drum head choice. The drum key technique allows me to know where I am tension-wise and know how much more I need to go when getting to a desired sound. The Evans UV2 coated snare drumhead features prominent attack, shorter sustain, medium brightness, and highly enhanced durability. This 15” x 6” Maple 8-ply snare drum tensions up fast, so locking down these aspects is essential for me not to over-crank the drum, which would cause it to sound choked. Love you. Okay. As a drum tech, backline tech, and drummer, I like having gear that makes sense for everything I do. And I know I’m not the only one who has struggled with finding the right amount of dampening for a snare drum or a Tom-tom. Some dampening can be too much or too little. Destroy a drum has created dampening that allows you to customize how much or little muffling you might need for a drum. This product is for you to set and forget so that you have the sound you want every time you use it. I know, I know, less talking and more specs and features. Let’s get into it! The Tom Muffle features & specs (pulled from Destroy A Drum’s website): “This is available in 3 different thicknesses (Minimal, Moderate, and Maximum) and can be customized by cutting it to any desired length. It ships in 6-foot lengths and can be used in temperatures as high as 220°. What this does is allow you to muffle any size tom as much as you like without having to deal with the usual gel/tape getting dirty, coming off, and not lasting or having to use only one size type of muffle. Fair warning: this isn't a fast or easy muffle to use. If you prefer the faster weights, dots, and covers we suggest being patient with trying this and starting with 1 roll of moderate thickness.  Once it’s on the head it’s made to stay so it’s not like the other reusable muffles, it’s made to last longer than the heads. This is specifically for only tom heads and we're in the process of making one for snares. What did you guys think? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. Okay. Clear drum heads are so misunderstood because they all get thrown into the same category. What we sometimes forget is that each drum head may look the same but depending on the manufacturer can do something different to even the same drum. For example, although the Remo Pinstripe and Evans EC2S look and sound very similar they are made very differently. Each company has a slightly different process in how they make their drum heads and what polyester film they use for it. In addition, they have different constructions as well. Evans has a slightly formed “pre-tensioned” collar and Remo has a completely unformed “blank canvas” collar. Each has its advantages and disadvantages but all of these factors change how we approach tuning them. This is where the real job gets done because if we have a preexisting option about certain drum heads we are going to approach it all wrong. We need to be willing to approach it in a way that still gets us the sound we need. This may come to us adjusting how we work with certain drum heads to get the same sound. Even as simple as stretching out a specific brand more than another because that’s what it needs. In the end, we all will play what we want to play. All I’m suggesting is to have an open mind to how you are getting the sound you need no matter the drum heads. The drum head shouldn’t matter because, in the end, you see the one creating the sound and tuning it. The drum head is only a tool to help you achieve it. Just a thought. Love you, guys. Okay! The optional in-line pads allow the LA-120s dynamic range and depth to be fully utilized on high SPL sound sources. OMNI & CARDIOID POLAR PATTERNS: Cardioid capsules will focus each microphone’s attention directly to where it is pointed, reducing the overall sound of a room in a recording. Omnidirectional capsules allow the sound of a room or other off-axis instrumentation to be captured naturally and with uncolored authenticity.” Okay. This particular tuning has started to become a favorite of mine and one I haven’t done on this Yamaha SD-980RP Hot Red Recording Custom 14” x 8” Snare Drum. Let’s get into it. This tuning is built on a well-tuned snare side head and properly tensioned snare wires. With that said, the snare side head is tight but has some give to it. The drum key technique allows me to know where I am tension-wise and know how much more I need to go when getting to a desired tension. The @Evans Drumheads EC Reverse Dot snare drumhead allows for a moderate attack, sustain, and tone, with above-average durability. This 14” x 8” classic snare drum tensions up fast, so having drum key technique and knowing your drum head is essential for me not to over-crank the drum that would cause it to choke. What do you guys think? How do you achieve a medium-high snare sound? Does the process look similar to this? Leave a comment. Let’s talk about it! Love you, guys!! Okay. Few things can affect a snare drum sound more than what type of snare wires we use on that snare drum. Depending on the snare beds on our snare drum, a high count of wires can sound very loose when tight. A smaller snare wire count can provide you with more control while creating the sounds you are looking for. Even the material and length of the wires can affect the sensitivity, snappiness, brightness, or darkness of the sound that the snare drum will make. All of these aspects of snare wires are something we don’t tend to think about too much and then wonder why we are not getting the sound we want. Finding the right set of wires starts with the snare bed, as mentioned before. If you don’t know what a snare bed is, it is “a slight depression in the bearing edge of a drum that allows the snare wires to rest against the drum's head.” Finding out how deep and wide the snare bed on your snare drum is will dictate what count and style of snare wires you will put on that specific snare drum. Snare Wire options should be specific to each snare drum because each is different. It’s one of the things that are made differently because each builder does them in their way. For this reason, we shouldn’t just slap any set of snare wires on a snare drum. Take the time to find out the best potential fit for your snare drum so you can get the most out of it. I would love to hear from you guys. Do you have a go-to set of wires? Does it change for each snare drum, or is it the same for all of them? Let’s talk about it in the comments. Just a thought. We tend to talk a lot about the importance of maintaining the drums that we have. I recognize talking can only go so far, so I had to show y’all what I was talking about. This was a maintenance job I did on the DW Collector Series drum kit that I get to play on often. The sizes for this kit are a 14” snare drum, 12” rack tom, 14” floor tom, 16” floor tom, and 22” kick drum. I did a maintenance job on this same kit in May, although plenty of events have happened since then, and this kit needed a refresher. This time around, all the drums on the kit were getting new Batter side drum heads, shell refreshing, mounting screws tightened, cleaned, and re-tuned. I changed it up this time with drumheads and did Evans on everything! On the Tom’s, I went with Clear EC2S, which are 2-ply of 7mil giving opened yet focused sound. With the kick drum, I used the EMAD Heavyweight Clear drum heads, which are 2-ply of 10mil that provide a nice punchy yet durable kick sound. Lastly, I used a Coated Heavyweight on the snare, which also has a 2-ply of 10mil and a reverse dot for more durability. By far, this is the best this snare drum has sounded! I’ve tried so many drum heads on this snare drum, and I think I finally got the one. As you can hear, the after-maintenance sounds tighter, more focused, and lively than before. PS: I made sure I vacuumed the drum carpet as well. You can’t forget about that! Stay creative, and have a great rest of the week. Love you, guys!! Okay. When it comes to drums, the simplest thing can make a difference in the sound. The tightness of our snare drum basket is one of those things. This drum hack is simple and can affect the drum in a big way, depending on the tuning. The idea is the tighter the snare basket is, the shorter the snare sound sounds, and as you loosen it you add the sustain and sizzle back to the sound. With this tuning, the difference is not astronomical, but it provides enough to give you something a little different. In the past, I would have come out and said how bad over-tightening your snare basket is. Although, this act can help to create a snare sound that serves a specific style of music. In the end, it all comes down to intentionality with this kind of drum hack. Have a reason why you do something “wrong” and it will never be wrong to do. Give it a try. You might be surprised at how well it works. What do you guys think? How tight do you have your snare basket? Have you ever experimented with the tightness of your snare basket? Leave a comment. Let’s talk about it! Stay creative, and have a great rest of the week. Love you, guys!! Okay. This particular tuning has become a favorite of mine and one I haven’t done on this Pearl Brass 14” x 6.5” SensiTone snare drum in some time Let’s get into it. This tuning is built on a well-tuned snare side head and properly tensioned snare wires. With that said, the snare side head is tight but has some give to it. The drum key technique allows me to know where I am tension-wise and know how much more I need to go when getting to a desired tension. The Evans EC Reverse Dot snare drumhead allows for a moderate attack, sustain, and tone, with above-average durability. This 14” x 6.5” brass snare drum tensions up fast, so having drum key technique and knowing your drum head is essential for me not to over-crank the drum that would cause it to choke. I wanted to change it up this week and give a quick tone check of how the drums in my home studio are sounding. The drum kit is a 1970s Pearl MIJ Drum Kit with a 13” rack tom, 16” floor tom, and 22” kick drum. There is also a 14” rack Tom that you have seen a lot of that is not in this video. The Tom’s have @Evans Drumheads G2s on top and G1s on bottom, and the kick drum has an Onyx EMAD. The snare drum is a Custom 15” x 6” 8-ply Maple with an Evans UV2 on the batter. These drum heads are settling in nicely to this kit and studying in tune so well. After tweaking the drum heads they have truly settled in and haven't slipped in tuning once. I've also been enjoying this UV2 on this Maple snare drum, very snappy and full! The drum sounded perfect, with very little EQ and compression needed. I just added new overheads as well. That video is coming soon. This result is exciting and gets me excited about what is possible in this home studio. Additionally, I hope this encourages you to keep experimenting with the drums you have. One drum head change or tuning can make all the difference. Stay creative, and have a great rest of the week.
