solitaryconfinement hashtag performance

#solitaryconfinement explores themes of isolation, mental health, resilience, survival, psychological impact, loneliness, self-discovery, reflection, vulnerability, emotional struggle, confinement experiences, personal growth, awareness, activism, human rights, and the search for connection.
Luigi Mangione has spent weeks in a 9 x 7 ft cell, alone, for 23 hours a day. And he hasn’t even been convicted. They call it the Special Housing Unit. But it’s literally the same thing as solitary confinement. Studies show that solitary confinement can cause anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, and *unaliving* thoughts—even after just a few days. The UN says anything longer than 15 days is considered literal torture. Yet in the U.S., over 80,000 people endure this every single day. And it’s worse for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color. While BIPOC make up 37% of the U.S. population, they represent 56% of the incarcerated and are disproportionately placed in solitary. This barbaric system isolates ordinary and even innocent people often before they’ve even had a trial. Take Kalief Browder. At 16 years old, he was accused of stealing a backpack and spent nearly 3 years in Rikers Island awaiting trial—-2 of those years were spent in solitary confinement. He was eventually released when the charges were dropped, but the damage was done. In 2015, he took his own life as a direct result of the abuse and isolation he faced while in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Solitary confinement is a cruel practice that often targets young Black boys. If you want to know more of his story, I highly recommend that you watch “Time: The Kalief Browder Story” on Netflix. It’s a heartbreaking but necessary look at what happens when we allow systems like this to continue. I’ve written a couple of college papers on solitary confinement, and learning about the treatment of inmates (many convicting of minor crimes), was one of the most eye-opening moments of my academic career. It was one of the things that led me to separating more and more from traditional, political parties. It changed the way I see the government and our systems. Were you aware of what solitary confinement is like? #LuigiMangione #Luigi #SolitaryConfinement #MentalHealthAwareness Video ID: A video of Syanne, a multiracial disabled Latina, speaking into the camera. Images of Luigi Mangione show as well as images of inside prisons and solitary confinement cells.
